Burwash Correctional Centre Over Night Adventure < on 7/25/2019 12:25 PM > | Reply with Quote
So, I THINK I may have discovered the formula for well performing post where the site members actually interact and comment.
1 - Visit a location that is near and dear to long time members 2 - Make sure this location was popular approximately 8-12 years ago 3 - Take Pictures of that location 4 - Make a post
I've noticed some of the more popular posts here are not those of new locations, rather ones that strike a chord with the OG's on the site, those who have been members here for a decade or more.
But maybe I'm wrong?
Anyway, I know that may of you guys hold Camp Bison near and dear and it has a special place in your hearts.
Back in the spring, RiddimRyder and I decided that Burwash would be a perfect location for our annual summer exploring camp out, so I reached out to Dave and Josh, the owners and we arranged for a weekend in June.
Josh had warned us that a beaver dam had washed out the trail and told us where we could find a newly carved ATV path to avoid this....well, we missed that alternate route and found ourselves with a choice....go back and find the trail, power through and get wet feet.
I had no idea how deep this wash out was and at some points the water was above our knees.
After over an hour and covered in mosquito bites (Burwash mosquitos can bite through mesh bug suits) we finally arrived, we stopped for a quick drink as we have around 5 more minutes of walking and THEN RiddimRyder pulls out his mosquito repellant......
We head up to the roof to drop our gear, dry our feet and crack open a cold but shaken beer, we take in the last couple hours of sunlight on the roof..
We head inside and pick our home base, the area on the 2nd floor at the top of the ramp and before the auditorium. This location is central, up from the main floor (in the event that wildlife roam inside at night), and it has a concrete floor and high roof...perfect for our camp fire.
We located the two remaining cell beds and lugged them up, sadly there were no places to hang our hammocks.
We scrounge for fire wood and set up camp
The evening is a fun one, far too many beers consumed and an entire abandoned prison to ourselves!

In the morning we are tired and feeling rough but now it's time to get to work and explore and photograph. It was great to walk the halls that so many have before us and to see the many familiar scenes and areas that had been captured by so many others.

Finally, while exploring the night before, we found two scooters....so what do you do when you find scooters in an abandoned jail??
I've tried to keep this post short, but should you be interested in hearing about the whole adventure and seeing all the photos, I have a full report up on my website:
Thanks for stopping by and checking this out, I hope it brought back some memories and perhaps inspired those who haven't been to reach out to the owners and take the long hike in! It's so worth it!

I LOVE this place. Wish I had the opportunity to camp there! John asks for a little more if you plan to take pics, and as an unplanned stop on an already over budget vacation, I had to go pic-less. Thanks so much for sharing and including tales of the hike in. Mother-Canuckin' skeeters are no joke!
Before anyone inundates the thread with the how's and where's - just Google it. Legal access is super easy, and the owner is a really nice guy. Just ask, sign a waiver, and flip him a donation for his cause. He will NOT be nice if you trespass, and WILL press charges when you are(and you will be) caught.
Fun side note - Camp Bison was a featured location in Season 2, episode 4 of the survival show "Dude, You're Screwed" on Discovery.
PS - Even better tale on your website - nice work!

Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.
