Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's methamphetamine.

My job requires me to crawl through tunnels, climb way up high, access utility rooms, visit old attics, and even wear all black while I do it. I've had this question on my mind for a while: is it really urbex if you're supposed to be doing it? Sure, they're exactly what you'd want to be exploring, but I'm told to do this- it's my work. Does that count as urban exploration or is that just me doing my job?

I say no it isn't, in a sense, but don't let that stop you from enjoying it.

It doesn't; I've seen some pretty historic stuff.

I would agree with this...it's a 60/40 kind of thing I suppose, but you're still getting to see and access places that fulfill your exploring itch, and if you're being told (and paid) to do it, well, all the better IMO.
I'm kinda like that with tours...I'd rather not pay for it, but if that's the option, and it gets me in and taking pictures, well...we can't disprove that I didn't explore it. 😉
Have fun out there...in the end, the labels don't matter nearly as much as the experience!

Of course it is. You're just getting paid to do it, even better.
Downside is your on the company clock.
Paying to see it though is tourism I suppose.

The object is getting to see it with minimal, preferably no damages to yourself.

Unless your job is 'urbexer' it's not, it's your job that just happens to involve being in certain places one might like to trespass in.

Wait.

Arent you the mod that defended "urbexing" with permission and chastised me for suggesting it was just tourism?

Guess I was too stupid to see ever see much of a distinction.

1. Boss lets you in?

2. Property owner lets you in?

Either way you are going places your are "supposed to go"

I agree with your statement, the one here, and I adhere to the Infiltration concept but why the new opinion?

I UER'd the Hell out of the Adams Mark Hotel in Dallas while I was there for a meeting had an hour to spare before and a couple hours after "my job". Sneaking around the basement, kitchen and engineering department and employee only areas.

At the end of the day it was fun and gave a mild adrenaline rush. I don't care if anyone here feels it dont count LOL

To be honest, I just don't care whether you get to see it by sneaking in or if your boss pays you. Take some cool photos and share with us. Don't worry whether it's "Urbex" or not. Cool photos and write ups are always worthwhile.

I explore old mines. Sometimes with permission, mostly not. If I'm climbing down a couple of hundred feet of rotting ladder into a mine that no one has been into in the last 50 years, whether I have "permission" to be there makes absolutely no difference. If someone wants to call it "tourism", I welcome them to be the first one down the shaft. Hope you are damn good on rope.

Tourism? I think not...

If you get permission from an owner to go in somewhere you aren't normally supposed to go, that's still urban exploration. If it is your workplace, it is not urban exploring on some level. A security guard at a site does not double as an urban explorer, nor does a construction crane operator. They can take pictures that look similar to what an explorer would take, and they could even enjoy it a lot. More importantly look at the last part of my original sentence.
