I am outa here <--

So my daughter (13) and I have been doing a little exploration over the last 6 months or so. She is young so we don't do anything risky. Its good father daughter time seeing as we are both risk takers. Gives her an outlet and allows me to keep an eye on her and teach her some stuff.

On the second run we did I was trying to explain the "its time to leave" feeling you get sometimes during an exploration.

I am not talking about the usual excitement or trepidation that we frequently feel, and in fact, seek out. That stuff is priceless.

I am talking about that feeling that you get when you know, in that instant that it is time to leave. Sometimes its prompted by something obvious. Sounds of a car, or other voices, that stuff is easy to spot.

I am talking about something much less tangible.

I recently ignored that feeling when we arrived at a new place. As soon as we pulled up after a 40 min drive I was hit with a feeling that we should just turn around and go. We had driven so far and it was such a nice day... Walking back to the car a little later and there was the trooper behind my car running my plates. These places often attract people with not such good intentions he explained. In retrospect I think I know why I knew it was time to call it and I did not listen to myself.

We make a point of not carrying anything suspicious and once I explained he was cool, we were lucky. My daughter got a lesson on how to interact with law enforcement, that's good i guess? My wife did not seem to think so.

Its a good life lesson, especially for a young lady. I told her that if she is at a party or with some friends doing something and she gets that feeling she is allowed to "nope" outa there.

I even let her call a run later in the year, we were in a building and she looked at me and said its time to go, and we did! No questions asked.

Do you have any good "I am outa here stories"?

Is there a tell you use?

Is this even a thing in this community???

That was a friendly LEO encounter.
Easy to do.
Done it so much in the last couple decades it has become second nature.

However...
Dealing with pissed off cops is not easy.
If you want a good outcome, you need to keep your wits about you and be unfailingly compliant with their orders.
Staying calm, and not being nervous or belligerent helps a lot.
Many times it's caused by bad info being given to said cops and you end up on the receiving end of it.
Been taken down by shotgun.
An interesting experience to be looking at a #12 leveled at your chest from 10 feet out.
They were a bit on edge because they thought I was armed.
Once they realized the rifle was a tripod things slowly leveled out

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

That sounds quite scary. I have heard the tripod thing a couple times. They should make one from yellow plastic/metal or just caution tape on it for better recognition.

I was a little put off by that LEO experience, subsequently i am cool with it and we have been out a couple times after.

I did exactly as you said, absolutely complaint, hands out to the side where he could see them kind of stuff. It was not so bad.

State cops are generally easier to deal with.
Better training.
If they're running your tag somewhere you shouldn't be parked it's better to approach them.
Makes their day easier.
They'll have it towed sometimes otherwise.

If they didn't see you come off the property, a cover story like being out for a walk works better if it's a state property and they look after it.
Don't dime yourself out.
Had the exact same thing happen at Haverford State Mental Hospital. Was parked well off 76, but the state cop knew the game.
Told him I was looking at wildlife.
We had a discussion about foxes... that fox came in handy.
He knew but no harm, no foul.
He was after scrappers and vandals.

I absolutely know that feeling! I have had it twice in really remote places on a different continent. Both times I listened and have always been a little curious as to whether or not I was just being weird in a way that cost two phenomenal explores.

I’ve had it other times and places too but the effort to get to the locations was never quite as involved as multiple flights and countries. I’ve pissed off buddies with it and they’ve never explored with me since. But, I’ve been able to walk away from every explore I’ve done and I haven’t gotten a charge yet.

The one and only time I didn’t trust that feeling I ended up cornered in a place with 4 officers circling the building. Holding up in a concealed but able to see my surroundings space full of live pigeons and rats is an experience I won’t be choosing to repeat if I can avoid it. I also have never explored with those people again.

Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's methamphetamine.

Yeah. I was up on a ladder higher than 100 feet once and I saw that the top section wasn't bolted in properly. When ladders wobble it's time to peace it.

I always listen to that gut feeling in my stomach now after the one occasion I decided not to ended up with me and my friend being attacked in an abandoned house by a farmer in Belgium whilst his wife slashed our car tyres.

After that I made a vow to always do what my gut says, to the detriment of some trips where I simply have not liked the feel of doing whatever and have noped out of it.

Got the raised hairs on top floor of an under-construction dorm building at 3AM. It'd been quiet and empty the entire time until suddenly I heard a noise that sounded human-generated and bailed right quick. Got spotted by a flashlight on the way out but escaped anyway. Entire experience is detailed in this (FM only) thread: http://www.uer.ca/...urrpage=1&pp#post0

This one time my friends and I were exploring an abandoned resort. The resort had two sides separated by a busy highway.
As I'm driving by I had a bad feeling about trying to get to the side with the cabins because it's very exposed. Anyway I park and we begin the hike in the woods to the side with cover. Easy hike just had to endure going up and downhill. We explore that side of the resort was pretty neat.
Friends are ready to go to the other side and the whole time I'm preaching 'how this is a bad idea! But they want to see it saying "We * Be.safehave.fun drove 4 hrs to get here, we should see everything". Well as soon as they're about to take off to the other side a patrol car pulls up. Safe to say we didn't check the other side, we went back the way we came.

Actually one of the only other significant ones I can think of where we were actually inside somewhere happened last year in a school myself, Essex and Kil.lill were exploring.

We had got in through the only access point and made our way to the corridor around the auditorium when suddenly we all heard a definite, purposeful banging noise from the floor above us, followed by some sort of muffled walking sounds. We stopped talking and listened, then started talking again and once again the banging started. We then agreed that whatever was up there wasn't something we wanted to run into as it just felt 'wrong', so we decided then and there to leave. We got a bit lost trying to find the way out again but we did eventually find the window, and as soon as we had climbed out and walked around the outside of the building a police SUV pulled into the school's parking lot - coincidence, or pure luck? I don't want to know but we walked away with the police none the wiser.
