| | | You know what weirds me out the most? I live pretty close to the airport, and I'm pretty geeked out about planes. These days I'm seeing about one plane in the air per day. It's not post 9/11 weird. But things are right up there on the weird-factor scale. | I live pretty close to PTI Airport (and right under their flight paths), and I've noticed that, too. It's not a huge airport, but we get our share, until lately...kinda creepy, and makes me think of the empty 9/11-9/13 skies as well. Been seeing maybe 2-5 planes a day. Each week I'll see at least 1 huge military plane, and last Friday I saw 3 small jets flying towards PTI. Not unheard of them to do touch and go training from time to time here (Charlotte's and Raleigh's airspace is too full to allow them to do it), but along with Corondamonium it makes ya think. I've heard some of the state borders are being scrutinized...banks are drive-thru only...pretty much the same story as everywhere else. The local Walmart stock is starting to come back, but still no TP. The unreality (not complacently or apathy, just a constant WTF?) keeps sneaking up on me...the big horrible stuff can be processed, railed against, talked about...it's those kinda little things, like no barber shops and 3 planes or so a day that just blow your wheels a piece at a time. Stay strong, y'all...

| | | Posted by blackhawk As I predicted the US in now effectively a state of Martial Law. In 63 years I have never seen the USA locked down like this. They're using the term "at war". The are limiting store hours and allowing only certain ones to be open. A 20 minute line outside Walmart and a fat deputy protecting it. Only 100 allowed in at a time. Only 2 checkout cashiers lol, normal. Why do you think they're throwing money at you? Yeah, we're boned... https://www.foxnew...reaching-3000-mark

| | | What we're experiencing is similar to a plane crash. A plane crash is very seldom a single, catastrophic event, but a chain of events where each subsequent event exacerbates the previous event. The bureaucrats handled the early stages of this pandemic according to the same old CDC & NIH playbook that has been used on every single disease that has come our way since the 1960s swine flu outbreak. Every outbreak of some deadly disease was handled the same way. This time, they got caught a little off-guard in a way that they were not expecting or prepared for. Similar to 9/11/01. Commercial airliners get hijacked. The playbook up until that day was: talk to the hijackers, find out what the demands are, try to negotiate with hijackers, yada, yada, yada. We all know how that turned out. The US healthcare system is not designed for this. Hospitals in the US are designed and run to make a profit. Even the ones that are supposedly "non-profit" organizations. They remain profitable by keeping as many of the available beds as occupied as possible and are simply not designed for this type of emergency. So for now, we're stuck with this global imbroglio and losing our minds over being Monday Morning Quarterbacks is not helping anyone. All that being said, if something like this EVER happens again, then yes, get out the pitchforks.

| | | Well, sounds like this choice has been deemed irresponsible, but I went exploring last night. It was eerie. Downtown minneapolis empty, one car every 10 minutes. We did a drain, met a confused family of beavers, i tried to climb the outside of a sealed grain silo up to a big neon sign, but ripped my pants before i could even get in the ladder cage. So I sat and watched my buddy do it. Only people we saw were janitor/maintenance type works and crack heads. Weird ones too. One dude was walking around playing electric guitar out of a shitty little speaker. Sad, groovy blues. We were trying to give him praise but as we tried to approach him, he kept turning away to hide his face. The music sounded eerie as hell at 3:30 in the morning. There was another dude just walking around with a bicycle, but he wasn't riding it. Just wandering up and down the blocks shouting WHOO like he just did a big bench press or something. Very strange. One janitor was flashing his flashlight, but luckily we hadn't done anything illegal yet. Gonna post some pics later on the great lakes forum.

| It's a very similar state in the UK right now. Our hospital systems were never equipped or designed to cope with something like this, of this scale happening. Something like 20,000 retired medical workers and upwards of a million civilians have volunteered to work or provide assistance to the NHS in various capacities either by delivering goods, delivering vulnerable people to appointments, etc etc. It's absolutely unprecedented.

| Why wait? If I lose my job, I'm definitely losing my house. I live in the middle of fucking nowhere where tourism & hospitality are the only jobs other than working at walmart or your local mom & pop pizza shop. I was put on 80% pay but if things continue into say, June (which I fully expect), my employer is going under for good. Pretty much everyone I know has lost their job. Most of them have lost their health insurance as a result. If we start seeing people become homeless en masse, well, I'm personally not going to stand for that.

| | | Grim news of coronavirus infections and fatalities continued in the U.S. on Wednesday, with the number of confirmed cases rising above 200,000 and the number of deaths surpassing 5,000. The fatalities for Wednesday alone topped 1,000 -- a one-day toll more than double that usually recorded for lung cancer and influenza combined, USA Today reported. Some researchers predicted U.S. coronavirus deaths could surpass 2,000 per day by mid-April, exceeding daily deaths attributed to heart disease, the report said. Amid the climbing numbers, five more states – Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Nevada and Pennsylvania – added or expanded stay-at-home orders, while Michigan proposed a 70-day extension of an emergency declaration that had been set to expire April 7. “Now is the crunch time for us to lessen the peak, to make the bullseye smaller so we don't overrun our health care system,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said, according to FOX 5 of Atlanta. He added that the next three weeks were critical for Georgia and that residents needed to “hunker down.”

| Most of the blame goes squarely on China. They deliberately suppressed intel, and grossly falsified the events. The world lost critical time because China failed to act in a timely, appropriate manner and also allowed rapid dissemination of the virus beyond their borders. Posted by blitz If we start seeing people become homeless en masse, well, I'm personally not going to stand for that.
| Remember the great depression? My parents and their parents lived through it. I remember the stories. You can't stop something you don't see coming. Compared to the Spanish Flu pandemic this is tame. Only because of a lower mortality rate and the fact that most the mortalities are not young parents in their prime. Though more infectious than the Spanish flu, war events like WW1 didn't aid in its rapid spread. Had the Chinese acted in good faith the coronavirus may have never been a pandemic. Too late. See how fast and easy that was? Next time it may be a massive meteor impact, volcanic eruption, or any number of unforeseeable natural disasters like the great dust bowl. There's literally only so much you can do until you're wasting resources for nothing. You may have to wait a century or more. In the end it always ends in death, you're only true friend. Puny humans. At best we are all mere transients and stepping stones of the cosmos.

| | | Current US death rate is 2.16% and rising. https://www.google...a-grim-update/amp/ The USA will recover from this fully within a year and surge into new growth phase. Why? Because the rest of the world will be much harder hit including China. The USA was at the top to begin with and the ramifications of this pandemic will only strengthen her position. Be glad you live in the greatest nation on earth. Our system is working... and much better than any other on earth. All you need do is survive. Im a pragmatist; pessimists please feel free to use this perfect excuse to take the back door out of here

| | | What time was that shot at? It's not dead here even though we are on lockdown. Ector county saw a 1 case increases in 24 hrs, total of 12. No deaths yet. http://www.co.ecto...CoronavirusCOVID19 Posted by Aran
We aren't going to bounce back like you think we will. You think China's going to be much harder hit than us? America currently has more cases than Italy and China combined. Even if you think China is lying about their numbers that's an unacceptable number. We had several months notice to prepare and somehow the only thing we're number one in right now is number of people infected.
That's not a system that's working. You think the convoys of coffin trucks in Italy was bad? You ain't seen nothin yet. They've got prisoners from Rikers Island digging mass graves in NYC as we speak. The system is collapsing. Our leaders failed us. And that's not pessimism, that's realism.
