I haven't had a chance to come across anything too dangerous yet, since I've only been exploring for a short amount of time. But I am curious to see what others have experienced. Not only out of curiosity, but for future reference and safety going forward.

Back in the day you'd get repeated reminders of hellholes.

There are lots of stories, but the one bad thing that I know from experience in my local exploring community is bird crap. A friend once went on an exploring trip, and his first location was a closed building with no air flow and lots of bird crap inside. He spent the rest of the trip hospitalised.

First time I tried exploring an abandoned building, a local found me before entering, and pointed at the no trespassing sign, not very dangerous but quite startling, especially for my first time, planning to go again thru a different route soon.

Wow.... that must have been a shocker to see. Reminds me of a time my friend sent a picture of some sort of land mine and other ordinances waiting to be disposed of. Did you find anything else during that trip?

I find the scariest part of that is the spelling of 'grenade'!

Apart from certain cases of severe structural instability I've never really come across stuff that would be considered 'dangerous'. I suppose old chemicals and stuff would count, I explored a dye works once which had liberal quantities of delicious lead chromate splattered all over the walls which was quite dangerous.

Some genius posted a photo of a deer feeder, claimed it was a bomb. Cant find the thread now but thats really scary to consider, fuckin deer feeder man 'BOOM'

Looks to ce some paper cartridges containing filler material, sitting in a puddle of nitroglycerine that was at one time, was absorbed in the afore mentioned filler material.

I've found a few knives and animal sacrifices freak me out when I find them. I've come across some sort of ceremony in an abandoned cemetery in the woods (luckily wasn't seen) and had a gun pointed at me while exploring once. Stay safe out there guys!

Updated answer, I walked past a controversial right-wing church that was in the middle of an abandoned neighbourhood. Later we had a meetup and walked right through the same alley (July 25). On August 15, the church's leader held a massive rally that kickstarted the country's second wave of COVID-19, and that church became the center o media attention. If our timing was just a bit off, we could've put the entire urbex community of the country in contact with infection.

Do crazy situations count?

I once explored a drainage tunnel alone in a small town. (with my camera gear worth over $4,000). I had done a bit of digging after finding the entrance, and by sheer chance met an old timer at a bar that told me it was his favorite place to explore. So I paid my tab, and headed down. It was all well and good until about a mile in it became backbreaking from stooping low, and when it finally let up I was ready to get the hell out. I came into a homeless druggy camp and what gave it away that I had fucked up, was stepping in a T-shirt full of human shit... There was a man and female to my right and a guy on the left and they hardly had time to react because I came up into the area so quick. I think they thought I was one of them for a moment as the guy on the right called out some typical southern name I cannot remember. I told them I was just passing through and asked how to get out. It happened so fast they had not had time to process what I was doing before I walked into the daylight and climbed up this 10ft stone wall out of the drain area.

Sat on that wall and laughed for a moment glad to be back in the light, then grabbed a shake at this crappy shake place and called my ride.

While I was waiting I learned that the area I came out in was the other side of this town in the WORST area. Another group of guys walked up and sat at the same table as me and started talking (offered me weed and what I assume was crack). which was all well and good, appreciated the mans sentiment but it started getting dark, and then 3 more guys walked over and I had 5 dudes around me telling me prison stories and eying me up. At this point I realized it was time to go and just walked back to town center.

Maybe this is why I much prefer mines and caves lol.

Fuck yeah they count mate. I've had one similar to your experience.

I stumbled into a meth hotel. The place was an old scrap yard facility or something in Fort Worth. My buddy and I were walking around scouting for places to explore in the area and thought the huge abandoned building would be nice to check out. Wrong. As soon as we entered a huge warning sign hit us, and it was the smell of human piss and shit. Should have turned back right there and then, but we went a little further in. Not even 15 feet inside yet we were met by some scrawny fella with missing teeth holding a set of pliers just staring at us. I broke the silence and made some small talk with him and he told us about the building and how it was full of a lot of druggies shooting up. The dude of course asked if we had any change... so we promptly said no and took our leave.

Learned an important lesson that day. Smell piss or shit, and someone or something is probably nearby.

A lot of people are saying to wear a respirator, which you should, but make sure if you're using a half mask that you have the correct type of puck filters. Some are only used to keep dust and silica out but won't cover you for other things.
