so as some of you may know, when the last 3800 (pontiac grand prix) was starting to go i picked up a Kia Optima hybrid. it was cheap, well equipped. Anyways 4 years in, still happy with the car (never owned an import) and for a "cheap" car it is still pretty fun. Anyways, about 6 months ago i started getting a clunk in the steering, it slowly got worse until about a month ago it was becomming a vibration in the steering. Car was driving straight, no wobble, just in the steering wheel, and only at times. Turns out, kia and hyundais that have electric power steering have a consumable rubber coupling between the motor and the steering column. A 2$ part... that involves removing the entire steering column. Anyways, fixed it, swore a little, and ironically when i started the car... bob segers Like A Rock was playing on the radio... Is it a sign that i should buy a chevy lol?

asking entirely in good faith, why does one prefer an american brand car over say, a japanese one? is it purely sentimental?

i ask because i've only ever owned japanese vehicles (courtesy of my father) and have had nothing but spectacular luck and performance, compared to the many girls i've dated, who all happened to own GM/ford/dodge vehicles.

i'm 30, i've driven about 400k or so miles in my lifetime and have only ever owned 3 daily drivers (summer beaters don't count), all pre-owned, all japanese. all were, or have been, nothing short of spectacularly reliable and affordable to maintain.

daily drivers i've owned:

1. a '96 tacoma, which my dad gifted to me at 200k miles in 2006. in 2008, there was a buy-back because of frame issues and dealership gave me 8k for it (KBB was a whopping $800 -- i'll take it!). my parent's neighbor, who happened to work at said dealership, bought it from the dealership on a salvage title, replaced the frame himself, and he still has it as of 6 months ago, pushing half a million miles.

2. ...used the 8k from that buyback to buy a '02 honda civic, which i still own to this day and has about 180k miles (it's my commuter car).

3. in 2015 i bought a 4x4 base 2009 tacoma (62k miles at the time, bought for $12k) because i moved to the middle of the woods and needed a 4x4 for winter travel for work. i've put over 100k miles on it in the past 5 years and i haven't done a thing other than change the oil and replace the timing belt. part of me wishes the 2.7L would just die, so i can put in the diesel engine my buddy is saving for me... but i think the body/frame will die long before the engine does.

i've strongly considered trading in my tacoma because i really want a diesel truck. but i can't bring myself to trade it in for an american one. my boss traded in his tundra for a diesel chevy colorado... and he curses himself everyday for making that decision...

no hate intended, but living out here in bumblefuck nowhere... everyone has an american truck. hard keeping my mouth shut when everyone is bitching about how unreliable their american vehicle is...

for me, i started driving with a Ford Pinto. It was a great reliable car.
in 1996, I tried out a 1991 Cavalier RS coupe and a 1992 Ford Tempo sedan. I utterly hated the Ford... i hated the way it looked, the way it drove, the engine the transmission, everything. The Cavalier ticked all the boxes for 23 year old me... it was fun to drive, efficient, reasonable amount of power to get around with, comfortable to drive and nice creature comforts for an entry level car. To say I drove the wheels off that car was an understatement. In less than 4 years, I put over 150,000 miles on the car... drove it from northeastern New York to Rockille, Maryland just about every weekened. Made two trips to Tennessee in it, all over the East Coast of the US, Quebec... drove it to Toronto twice.

when I went to buy another car, another Cavalier just seemed like the logical choice. And so i stayed with Chevrolet from 1996 until, well, now... the only exception to this was my ONE Subaru. I bought a 2000 Legacy Wagon back around 2014... it was an utter piece of shit, but I loved that car.

I guess, in my case, i stayed with what worked for me.
there a couple of brands I stay away from for personal reasons...
Volkswagens- always trying to kill me as far back as 1989
Kia/Hyundai- these cars are just trying too hard.
Toyota- about as exciting to drive as watching wallpaper dry

I would've agreed with you until the last few years when I've seen how capable Tacomas and 4Runners are. I don't stare at my truck like I did with my wagons, but the Tacoma can go swimming and rock crawl.

lol... so could my Subaru Legacy.
i've had that in water halfway up the door trying to cross the Schroon River here in New York. I underestimated the depth of the water, but the Subaru put on it's landing craft face and chugged is way across and back when my hike was concluded.

rock crawling? Well, yeah, my 91 Cavalier did that... snapped four sway bars up front doing it too. (each event... sorry. and yes alcohol was involved)

I did a lot of things with my wagons that they shouldn't have done. I suspect going for a swim is what killed the transmission in my black wagon, it had to be rebuilt not long after being over the hood deep in water at 30,000km. Sounded like a coffee grinder afterwards. And maybe pretending to be a truck is why my silver wagon was so unhappy towards the end.

oh yeah, getting my frame replaced was a dream come true. was in pretty shitty condition when i bought mine used, didn't realize before i bought that previous owner had spray painted it black... ugh.

at about 130k i got frame and suspension entirely replaced, i undercoat every year now (i live in maine and we use a SHITLOAD of salt on the roads) -- have mine paid off and hoping it'll last at least 3-4 more years as my daily driver, then it becomes my dump truck
