As I posted in Main re: abandoned cars, I managed to legitimately buy a car I found at an abandoned property. It's a '72 Super Beetle in L21E, Tangerine Orange/Blood Orange. Oddly enough, it's the third '72 I've owned in this colour. And yes, they were all faded to primer red.

Rust is minimal, it needs a patch under the battery (typical) but the rest of the floors are okay, as are the heater channels. The front area of the frame head needs a patch, and I think it's because of the massive mouse nest sitting directly above it. The car was in a barn for 33 years and is mostly original which is cool. Even the "Fasten Seat Belts" light still turns on and off when you unbuckle.

Got it running with a carb rebuild and some points (and a lawnmower gas tank taped to the bumper for now). The trunk release cable was broken off and sitting in the back seat- it looks like someone tried to unbolt the trunk lid from inside the glove box and snapped off the hinge bolt flush. Got it open (and removed) but where the hinge bolt is located is going to be a huge pain in the ass drill out and tap. And sadly there was no hidden treasure in the trunk when I did get it open.

My wife has claimed it as her own and I've made more progress on this than any of my own Beetle projects lately because I promised her she'd be driving one by May. WHAT A STUPID THING TO SAY.

Paint is even coming back fairly well. It's not going to be a show car, just a driver.

My first '72 Super (I was 7...)

And the second one, about 15 years ago. It polished up really nicely but was a very rusty little car. I did a ton of work to it, and sold it to a guy who let it sit in wet grass for 9 years. I bought it back in September for $200 because I needed the transmission, and damn near cried. The paint still had some shine to it though!

Anyway, yeah, another Bug. Because I totally needed one.

i have fond memories of a 72 super beetle... my friend Shawn had one just out of high school. He blew the engine up in my dad's driveway and I helped him rebuild it. Car ran very well. He parked it in a barn at his late grandmothers property, and the garage caved in on it and an early model International Scout.

I'll have to check the brand, I forget! It's made in Canada, 110v and is portable-ish (it's bloody heavy but can be rolled around). It's good for 6000 lbs but I don't think I've ever come close to that.

I'd love a 2 post, but most require 15" of concrete. My garage has 6" of heated concrete, and I am not about to sacrifice the ThermoSlab cables to dig holes and pour 15" for the posts. Your style is exactly what I am looking for. Reviews are contradictory on virtually every model I have looked at, and I don't know anyone that has one to ask first hand!

I am anxious to see your bug paint when you finish polishing it out. Keep sharing!

Here's the model I have:

http://daytonaprod...-mid-rise-scissor/

My biggest issue for a normal hoist was ceiling height. Since I'm for the most part only working on aircooled VWs, they don't really have any components on the underside between the front and rear wheels, this is perfect and I don't need to put the car 6 feet up in the area. It's wonderful for brake jobs and stuff, and if I do need to do something right under a car, I just use a rolly stool.

Didn't you learn that lesson a long time ago with the manual swap promise?

Some shine is coming back to the paint but it's pretty badly oxidized. The trunk lid is a mess (lots of big chunks of paint missing) so it's probably going satin black and I'll throw a couple of rally lights on the thing for the vintage rally car look.

"IT'S JUST GOING TO BE A DRIVER"

Damn it.

It's almost ready for paint. Ended up finding some really badly done repairs which would drive me nuts, so new quarter panels and outer rockers have been welded in, the one front fender was an absolute sculpture and I had a decent yellow one in stock.

Did find some neat wheels and a really well done Kamei air dam replica- I'll post pics of that when the car has bumpers again.
