As I posted in Main re: abandoned cars, I managed to legitimately buy a car I found at an abandoned property. It's a '72 Super Beetle in L21E, Tangerine Orange/Blood Orange. Oddly enough, it's the third '72 I've owned in this colour. And yes, they were all faded to primer red.
Rust is minimal, it needs a patch under the battery (typical) but the rest of the floors are okay, as are the heater channels. The front area of the frame head needs a patch, and I think it's because of the massive mouse nest sitting directly above it. The car was in a barn for 33 years and is mostly original which is cool. Even the "Fasten Seat Belts" light still turns on and off when you unbuckle.
Got it running with a carb rebuild and some points (and a lawnmower gas tank taped to the bumper for now). The trunk release cable was broken off and sitting in the back seat- it looks like someone tried to unbolt the trunk lid from inside the glove box and snapped off the hinge bolt flush. Got it open (and removed) but where the hinge bolt is located is going to be a huge pain in the ass drill out and tap. And sadly there was no hidden treasure in the trunk when I did get it open.
My wife has claimed it as her own and I've made more progress on this than any of my own Beetle projects lately because I promised her she'd be driving one by May. WHAT A STUPID THING TO SAY.
Paint is even coming back fairly well. It's not going to be a show car, just a driver.
My first '72 Super (I was 7...)
And the second one, about 15 years ago. It polished up really nicely but was a very rusty little car. I did a ton of work to it, and sold it to a guy who let it sit in wet grass for 9 years. I bought it back in September for $200 because I needed the transmission, and damn near cried. The paint still had some shine to it though!
Anyway, yeah, another Bug. Because I totally needed one.
