Eerie Scouting Experience? Good Judgement?

Hello, this is my first thread post ever on here. I'm new-ish to exploring. I've only really gone with my friends who are more experienced and they would take the lead on stuff.

Recently, I found an abandoned gas station. It was a small independent gas station with two pumps, and then a building with a mechanic garage-office combo behind the pumps.

I kept an eye on it from afar for a while to make absolutely sure that it was not being used before checking it out. The nozzles were removed from the pumps and the pumps were turned off. Also, during a heavy snow fall a few weeks ago, it wasn't cleared out at all and there were no tire tracks indicating that there were people coming through.

At this point, I think the place hasn't been in use for over a year? maybe a year and a half? I remember it seeing it closed up in late 2019. I felt pretty confident that it was abandoned for the time being.

Recently, me and one of my more experienced friends got closer to check it out and when I went by the garage/office area, I noticed that there was a computer that was still on in there showing the feed from the cameras, but no indication that there was anyone that used that office recently (jackets hanging up, trash, lights on in the office, snow disturbed by the door to the office from opening it or footprints leading up into the snow).

We ended up just leaving as soon as I noticed that because I said that I didn't feel comfortable poking around there anymore, in the off chance that it was still being used/monitored.
We thought it was weird because the place was completely deserted and wasn't being used but there were no "no trespassing" signs and the power was obviously still working because of that computer.

I was curious:

Is it common to have power running in a gas station that hasn't been active in over a year?
Why keep the power running when the nozzles were removed and the pumps shut off?
Was it good judgement for me to want to leave? (I thought so)
Is it possible the gas station is still in use, just for some other purpose?

All I can think of is that it was a deterrent. I just found it super eerie.

Thank you.

I found myself in a similar situation a couple years ago. Best I can tell, if something happened on site they would have played the video back and seen what happened. But since I left no other signs of being there, they probably never checked the video and nothing ever came of it.

I see lots of gas station buildings reused as small offices are garages. Sometimes very hard to tell if they're abandoned or not with how unkept they look. I tend to stay away from stuff like this because if it does happen to be abandoned and just have power, there's not gonna be anything there anyway. Not worth the risk to accidentally stumble into somebody's office. I will however take that risk at a bigger place with something worth seeing inside.

I think you made the right call with leaving. In the future though, don't put so much thought into scouting it. You could be a random person pulling off the road to check the map or just a sightseer. This approach doesn't always work, like if you "happened to be taking a walk" behind a hospital or factory, but the concept can be applied to most places. If you're outside the property and not too suspicious, the worst that will happen is they ask you to leave.

That's sounds like sound advice! I guess I have a little bit of anxiety about getting caught haha

This place was something I passed by daily, it wasn't a stop and look several times kind of deal.

Your question has already been answered, but I've always gone with the assumption that if there's power, there can be alarms and/or cameras, and you may not know it until someone rolls up.

Kabbalah is an undramatic tradition that requires great patience and stability. One of the reasons for this tempo is that everyone has to mature his potential gradually and thoroughly at his natural pace. In this way his life's work unfolds at the right moment in his own and the cosmos's time.

Personally I think that if it made you uncomfortable, then you certainly made the right call. Urbexing is supposed to be fun, and if you’re not sure about a spot for any reason, then don’t go in. I’m sure that footage is never going to be checked unless you decided to break or steal something, but I think you made a good call by playing it safe.

Super late to this discussion. But we've got an old abandoned gas station in my town. Was super popular, owner died, huge fiasco with whoever inherited it, blah blah blah, gas station went under during the whole thing. All the equipment for the pumps were removed a few years ago when it closed and the power to them is gone too. Store is locked up, boarded up, the usual.

My place still has a light on a couple cameras on the property, even though it's been dark for about seven years now. It's mostly just to watch if someone comes in to screw up the place. A lot burglaries back then were motivated by people wanting to steal the copper pipes to resell the metal. I know the new owners come by and use some of the equipment in the back on some occasions(some sort of basic car repair/maintenance place used to be run in the same building), so it's not entirely abandoned.

Chances are if it was abandoned fairly recently, they might just be monitoring the premises to make sure someone doesn't come in and steal things in case they want to get the place up and running again, or maybe to deter a break in of someone hoping to finding some long forgotten cash or something. That'd explain why there's still power to the place, just to run CCTV.

Also you mentioned snow? Maybe they keep the power on to prevent the pipes from freezing inside the building during the winter.

I wouldn't sweat it, but leaving was probably a good move. You never know if the owner is tight about trespassers, or if he lives nearby.
