Some of you may have heard of Sandland, the DIY tunnel / cave / mine being dug out by Slim Jim (of Action Squad and Into The Darkness fame). Recently I've been adding my own touches to Jim's underground madness, including a Catacomb-style underground speakeasy!

Because when your 2020 Europe trip gets cancelled due to Covid, the only logical thing to do is dig your own cave to drink in!

Sandland is also expanding in some other directions (literally, underground!). We've dug out so much sand in 2020 / 2021 that the tailings pile outside is bigger than ever! It's going to cost extra to haul the sand away (the DNR won't let us just dump it, stupid environment!). Thus we've started a fundraiser to try and offset the extra costs so we can keep digging! If anyone would like to donate towards this noble cause we'd really appreciate it! The donation link is here: https://www.gofund...-costs-at-sandland

I tried attaching more photos but Avboard is still stuck in 1997 and I can't get my pics under 100k without going full potato. Also hotlinking images seems broken. So you'll have to visit the Sandland website where you can check out our other nonsense like the monorail train we bought from the local zoo

http://tunnelcity.com/

All of this is dug out of midwestern Jordan Sandstone (the same formation as some historic mines, caves, and other nearby tunnels, so we know it will last a long time!).

I read about this years ago, but had completely forgotten about it. I just LOVE it! Super jealous of this guys dream, efforts, and what has been accomplished so far. I'm only a couple hours away - would love to come help dig/haul for a couple days. Checking the calendar and planned vacation(s) this am!

Me and a couple friends tried this in my back yard when I was around ten. We got down about five feet, until my Dad got home from work. Big trouble!! My friends and I spent the next two days filling the hole back in.

Ha! Yeah near-surface and cut-n-cover tunnels can be sketchy... I'm still traumatized from watching that Rescue 911 episode from the 90s where a kid digs a hole in a sand dune and ends up with his lungs full of sand.

Fortunately sandstone is a different matter and is actually rock! Makes it harder to dig but 100% more stable! If you're familiar with Twin Cities exploring you'll know we have a lot of sandstone caves/mines/tunnels around here, some are 100+ years old and completely unlined and unsupported.

Hit Jim up on the Sandland FB group or website (tunnelcity.com)! He's always looking for digging help!

I need to get up there one of these days and help dig.

On a side note, is there a possibility of the speakeasy seeing use at a future Sandpex or is SlimJim still not sold on the idea?

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.
