A tale about the plight of one-of-our-own(?) in the NYT. < on 6/4/2021 5:00 PM > | Reply with Quote
I'm sure there are multiple takeaways. But I think the wrong one would be to assume that being a veteran is the only thing authorities can choose to be paranoid about.

What a story! Unfortunately a lot of cases like his happen because of the need for a scapegoat... every few years the authorities pick someone to throw the book at to show the media that they're being serious about it.
If he actually did damage some of the doors or cameras, then that's a different story... but it still shouldn't result in all of those charges. I'm glad he has a seemingly competent lawyer. Unfortunately cases like that wring the defendant dry in the court process alone, even if he is ultimately found not guilty.

His phrase "not everything that's illegal is immoral" will resonate here. I feel for the guy.
I also get the impression he might still be a free man if he hadn't stuck his social media username on the roof of a high-profile, active building. Especially as that linked him to every high-risk, critical infrastructure explore he seems to have beautifully, meticulously documented.
He doesn't deserve to have his life screwed by busybody cops with nothing better to do, anyway: last I checked, there was plenty of real crime and other social issues to tackle in Cincinnati. That cop saying he "left a wake of destruction"? Really!? You'd think the guy destroyed Iraq (twice), or something. That cop has to be clutching his pearls white-knuckle-tight, if he believes that for a single second. What a hero! :/
