| | | This large site in the central area of the UK has a pretty interesting history beyond that of the county headquarters of a fire & rescue service. The old manor house was built in the late 1890s, and it was sold in the 1930s to a wallpaper manufacturer. During the Second World War the outbuildings were converted into a decontamination centre in preparation for poison gas attacks, and then in the 1950s the site was sold to Rolls Royce who based their nuclear program there. A couple of decades later it was sold on to the county council who used it as their fire & rescue HQ until it moved to another site across the county a couple of years ago. The site is made up of half a dozen or so buildings - the manor house, plus others that range in age from the 1950s up to the 1980s and are in varying conditions of disrepair and include a couple of office buildings, a sports hall, cafeteria and maintenance/plant rooms. The power is still connected throughout the site which is a strange and worrying contrast to how damp and decayed some areas are. 1
