A few years back i was doing a walk around a building looking for a good p.o.e. Some parts of the walls seemed to be missing and the whole building was surrounded by fencing. By the looks of it, it could have been a little auto body shop of some sort, but I wasn't sure. Anyway, i found a gate in the fence and opened it up and went through and where a bunch of old beat up looking cars were parked.

I approached the building more closer to find a good entry and that's when off to my side I noticed a door open and a grumpy old man came out. He did not have a happy look on his face. I immediately lifted up my camera to sort of indicate i was not there to make mischief of any sort.

I even stated something along the lines of "I'm a photographer and I thought this building was abandoned."
he replied with "oh it's not abandoned"
me: "i am only here to take pics that is my only intention"
he: "that's bullshit.. people these days only want to lie, steal or fuck you"

At that, i turned and walked out of there at a brisk pace while he followed me out. fists clenched, heavy stomp and angry glare.

I guess the building wasn't abandoned hahaha

.... that last part worries me... hope he wasnt insinuating anything lmfao

Was driving on an old highway between two major cities this summer, when I noticed an abandoned looking building. I parked a few hundred metres away, took my camera and walked closer.

The driveway was so overgrown, that it was almost impossible to spot it. There were even trees growing in the middle of it, as no cars had clearly passed in ages. I decided to approach from the back anyway.

The house had barely any paint left, roof tiles were missing. There were holes in the eaves, one window was broken and another covered with plywood.

I took a few shots of the area but something made me careful. The bushes should have been full of berries, but there were none. I sneaked closer anyway.

I was around five steps from the front door, when I noticed a very old lady reading a book just two meters away. Rarely have I run that fast.

Well, yeah. I somehow want to believe, that she was no longer actually living there, but it had been her home for decades, and her relatives would sometimes drive her there to spend time in an environment she loved. Will have to check the place again in the winter to see if there's any life.

I have too many of those stories, but one that comes to mind was when I accidentally found a secret police surveillance station.

It was in the back of a parking garage I had walked through a few nights earlier and I waved to the suspiciously nice camera and door in the back corner. I was back just passing through and some middle-aged guy in all black came out and started screaming about how I was trespassing (I'm in a public garage) and how he had been tracking me on cameras across the university. Countless threats to arrest me and my friends later, and he calmed down enough for us to leave.

Keep in mind I was 14 just riding my bike with some friends. If he saw the actual trespassing I do he would probably have a heart attack.

Small house in a rural area with a couple of boarded up windows, car with no wheels in the driveway, and grass 3' high. The front door was blowing in the wind, and I walked in on a fat guy on a couch in his boxers watching Jerry Springer.

"Oh hey! What's up man?"
"Uhhh... yeah I'm looking for uhh, the lake."

He gave me directions to the lake. Things went better than expected. The place was demoed about a year later and there's a McMansion there now.

Cut that shit out.

I like bando. It fits in with Australia's nicknaming system of just adding o to the end of names.

For example Doug goes by Dougo.
A flannel shirt is a Flanno.
Housing Commission flats (Public Housing) are known as the Housos.
And now abandoned buildings are Bandos.

Makes sense to me.

I live in Illinois, and in the Midwest, there are some OLD houses on farmland that you think are abandoned but are only really "abandoned". Lots of farm equipment is stored there, the land is still usable, etc.

I decided to check one out in the middle of the winter when I thought there wouldn't be anyone around, since it was very out in the open, and with the corn cut down, pretty visible.

I didn't park THAT far away, just in case I had to book it, and as I was taking my first photo, I heard a backhoe filled with lawn debris. I was going to wait it out, but then I saw a normal car pull in behind it.

I don't think I've ever run/walked or threw my camera in my bag so quickly, and the (very angry looking) man saw me as I came out from the side of the house. He barked at me and asked what I was doing, and I casually told him I was using the restroom in those bushed and gestured wildly from where I was coming from.

I apologized and said it was an emergency, thanked him, and tried to keep my cool as I "walked" to the car.

The best part? I went back a few weeks later (successfully getting inside that time!), and the bushes were cut down... 😂

Right? Turns out it's still mostly full, but no one lives there - they just use the farm land/barns for storage.

And ohhhh, I've gotten hopelessly lost in NE quite a few times... 😂

It has happened to me twice in 7 years but only once where the occupant was home.

The house was very run down, adjacent to an active residential construction site, nobody was working that day. Several blown out windows, door cracked open with the handle busted off, mossy roof, no cars parked out front or nearby. I had been watching it for months and had never seen a single sign of life, assumed it was next in line for demolition. I parked my dirtbike nose-in between a construction outhouse and the exterior wall of the home (first mistake), out of sight from traffic. I slowly open the broken front door, walk in, and pull it shut behind me. The air was thick and warm. I knew that something was wrong the moment I smelt body odor and immediately froze, completely silent, barely breathing. All of the lights were off besides the faint glow of an old lamp. To my left an empty living room, bulletin boards covered in photos, tables covered in newspapers, furniture everywhere, stacks of furniture, upside down chairs, hoarder type situation. To my right the entrance to another room where the door had been removed and replaced with a hanging tarp. I remained completely still and silent for what felt like an eternity and then suddenly I hear the creaking of a mattress from behind the tarp... immediately followed by loud, tortured moaning.

I had never moved as quickly in my life. I swung the front door open and leapt onto my bike, heart pounding, struggling to tip toe it backwards into the parking lot and damn near looped the bike on my way out. For the love of god never park nose-in when you're exploring.

Once my friend and I were exploring a building that housed an abandoned doctor's office on the first floor. We finished shooting anything of interest and headed upstairs. The second floor was filled with maps, posters, phones, and was set up with a large area and then smaller cubicle like areas. We realized it was being used as someone's campaign headquarters for an upcoming election. As we were headed downstairs to leave, the front door opened and the candidate himself walked in. My friend wanted to hide but, seeing that there really wasn't anywhere to go, we instead walked up to him and told him we were local college students who wanted to volunteer for the campaign but couldn't find where to sign up so we walked through a door that had been left open to find someone. He initially seemed shocked but then, after talking for a while about politics, he took an email and told us he's contact us later about how to help out. He seemed like he bought it but, as we walked away, for some reason my friend turned around and said, "Don't worry, we didn't take any pictures of your campaign stuff". Luckily we were already near the car at that point.

Another time I was trying to get into an abandoned resort that was off a mountainous road. Somehow I got the directions mixed up and I walked off the wrong side of the road. I eventually found a large cabin that I assumed was what I was looking for as it looked kind of run down. One door was able to slide open. I got into the communal area and was amazed how preserved everything seemed. Then I heard the tv on upstairs and the low murmur of a couple talking and moving around. In a controlled panic I got out of there as fast as I could but I'm still concerned I left some type of footprints in the living room.

oh god... I went and scoped this rural school out... looked abandoned, went for it. Got in pretty easily via the basement somewhere. Slowly creped around and got to the second story. opened this door to seeing a tv on a night stand and a dude sleeping in his bed under the covers... slowly shut the door and got out asap.. heard him wake up but I was long gone.. Scary shit lol
