Shougang: Iron and Steel Plant the Size of a City

A steel works the size of a city is a pretty fascinating thing.

I couldn't find that I posted a full thread from this place on UER before. Let me introduce you to one of my favorite sites in the world: Shougang Steel

I finished a lengthy article (actually only part 1) on the history of this place if you want to read every thing. I will give an excerpt here:

In 2018 Capital Iron and Steel was included as one of the first 100 places on China’s Industrial Heritage Protection List which selected sites key to the industrial history of China. Multiple attributes such as its history and size make the plant a significant location. Shougang Factory covers a land area of 8.63 km² although it is only a component of the even larger Shijngshan industrial cluster. At its peak, the iron and steel factory operated 5 blast furnaces 6 coke ovens and rolling mills. Many components of the plant were superlatives, such as the first top-blown oxygen converter in China and the largest wire rod and billet chain casting plant in China[4]. The No. 2 blast furnace, completed in 1979, was the first modern blast furnace in China. At one point, the Shougang factory yielded a fourth of the profit and taxes in the city of Beijing and around 100,000 people worked and lived at the plant in the years before the relocation.

I first learned of this places only a few months after it shut down in 2011 and then was able to visit several times later that year. There are a few sites I've visited repeatedly, but never with the spread of this one. My last visit was in late 2019 just before the pandemic locked me out of the country. I still have pics and stories from the last few visits that I never posted.

In 2011 you could literally take a city bus from the metro station that would drop you off right in the middle of the complex where you could roam freely. It was so large even over several days you could see only a small fraction. Today, you can take that same bus route, but now the blast furnaces are part of a pretty cool industrial heritage museum/park and several venues for the 2022 Beijing Olympics are really tastefully integrated.

Wow, thanks for sharing this epic location! And your blog post about this was great. I like that you included your sources too

For a place that was so accessible, I'm impressed at how little graffiti there appears to be.

It's always been the industrial garden of Eden for me!

Thanks. I like to find the real stories behind places and avoid and debunk the hearsay that's all too common in urbex.

Interesting that you noticed the lack of graffiti. Now that you point that out, in all my visits I never remember seeing any signifiant graffiti. Graffiti culture in China is quite different and pretty new and I don't often see abandoned spots covered in graf.

Someday, after the world goes back to normal, you can have a visit and see the preserved ones.

And of course the Daily Mail hated it.

During the 2018 Winter Olympics, foreign journalists all made a stop by the Alps, an abandoned ski resort near the Olympic site, and many articles were written about that as well.

Incredible article, lol.
People have no idea there are cooling towers that are not associated with nuclear plants.
The public areas are beautifully restored and are as cool as any science museum and surrounded by posh park lands.

This is. Nuts. It makes me think of two closest examples, but it looks to be 20+ x's their size.

Great appreciation of the subject, and even greater use of camera and any post-prod. Assume digital, and some filmy filter added, which normally results in cliched clown vomit, over-cooked shit (more is better right?).

But, these are just great to my filmy eye - subtle, adds to the feel, even, consistent tones, with a great latitude.

I may need to correct my distaste for the typical dry brightness of digital photography.

You're gunna tell me now, these are just I-phone snaps or something?

I took them on a Motorola Razr haha

But really, thanks for the assessments. Digital with some postprocessing done is correct. If I processed these today, I probably would have done even less. Even though I have been back to the place several times over the years, none of the photos really come close to what I was able to capture on my first few visits.

I do have a few film shots from there also:
