48ish Hours Over Detroit

So whilst in Detroit last month with the big bunch of miscreants we did some other stuff too. At various points we split up and some of us did things others didn't and vice versa, which was pretty cool as it meant we all got to see some cool stuff and have more stories to tell.

We only did one school, which as I eluded to in the churches thread ended up with a large number of members of the Detroit police department arriving soon afterwards. We got unlucky and assumed the people working on the roof of a house at the end of the block didn't care (they did), so after about fifteen minutes inside I think it was Essex who noticed the two police vehicles parked by our cars outside from an upstairs window, and then a few seconds later the news got through to the various scattered members of the group inside that they were here for us and it was probably best to leave at that point - after exiting and walking down the road more police arrived to block our path, and at that point you know there will probably one of two outcomes - either everything will be fine or it'll be not fine.

Luckily the officer in command of the situation was very friendly, and we had a good-natured discussion with them after they got the whole 'you know you can't be in those buildings' bit out the way. They even suggested other places we could go, and said the owner of the school should take better care of it and not leave it open - and when they realised I was from the UK were interested in that too. So after a while we went our separate ways and decided two things, one to mostly avoid the schools this time and two to not explore anything in that specific police district of the city to avoid potentially running into the same officers again.

We then struck out a few times and it was then we realised that the Detroit we'd experienced in 2019 and before was gone. However we still did a few good things as well as a bunch more churches of course.

After splitting up we were on our way to somewhere else and myself, SwanStation and his girlfriend passed an inviting looking abandoned strip club. I myself have never explored an abandoned strip club and sometimes you just have to check something out on the off chance it contains something cool.

The club closed in 2016 following numerous long-running reports of gunfire, fighting, drug taking, dancers being groped and indecent exposure from patrons - much to the community's relief I imagine.

The final place we went to on the first day was a place that is doing the rounds quite a bit on Instagram and the like - this building was designed by Minoru Yamasaki, the same person responsible for the original World Trade Center in New York and a number of buildings around the Detroit area. It was originally home to the regional sales office of a metal supply company, but was bought by a leisure company who totally butchered the interior and part of the exterior. In Yamasaki's original design the ground/first floor area is recessed a lot more without the black windows, and there were reflection pools running around the outside. The interior was similarly chopped up with the original entirely open atrium in the centre blocked off on the third floor to create space for a boxing gym, and a swimming pool was dug into the ground floor level.

This place was an absolute nightmare to navigate, as the floor around the whole swimming pool area and one entire staircase was encased in an inch-thick coating of slick ice. Climbing that icy staircase is something I'll never forget, it was like something out of Takeshi's Castle it was that ridiculous. We chose to come down the ice-free second staircase to go out, but that meant contending with the ice rink that was the swimming pool, which was arguably just as bad.

Lastly in this little non-religious roundup is another well known place that I had seen for ages on Instagram. The old Detroit Fire Department Training Academy, one of the most unique structures I've seen for a long time.

An easy in and out with no fuss.

nice work and yeah the "D" is deceptive to say the least

Kabbalah is an undramatic tradition that requires great patience and stability. One of the reasons for this tempo is that everyone has to mature his potential gradually and thoroughly at his natural pace. In this way his life's work unfolds at the right moment in his own and the cosmos's time.

Love this little round up man. I wish I had called that theater earlier as they eventually did call me back and they are very receptive to having us come by. That will have to be next time!

The schools were definitely strange, I ended up sitting out several of them after we had split off. It's really amazing the amount that everyone got into though. I'd guess it's probably near 30 places if you add it all up together. Not bad for a weekend!

Glad to hear the cops were cool about it and let you guys go on your way. Usually happens in cities where the cops have better things to do and you aren’t disrespectful to them.

I can only imagine how much Detroit has changed now.
