On the outskirts of my former home town was an intriguing old brick building. It wasn't very spectacular, but what made it stand out was its strange shape. The layout was a bit like a three part hand fan and also the roof line was very out of the ordinary.
The building was a former mail truck depot, but had found other use decades ago. It now hosted a variety of small businesses, one of which was a flea market, which I sometimes visited.
But I had started to get worried about the fate of the building. A large sign promoting a new business park had found its way to a nearby junction. It had stood there for some years now and nothing had happened. Slowly I started to believe that the eccentric old depot was safe.
That was until one day when I decided to visit the flea market still in the building and had a look around the corner.
So the flea market was still very much in business in the wing on the left while the center portion of the building was being demolished. I asked the flea market about their future and they told me that they would be evicted by the end of the month, as the whole building would be razed.
I quietly said my goodbyes to the building and was angry at myself for not coming here earlier to explore. In the photo above you can see the asymmetric roof line.
Flash forward to a few days later. I had gone on a long bike trip, started drinking beer and returned to the city center very late in the evening already a bit tipsy. That was when this sight greeted me:
So the demolition crew had gone home for the weekend and left the doors unlocked. There was no fence around the end of the building, nothing to stop me from going in.
And it turned out to be a very dull place. But it was easier to see the building disappear after having had the chance to see it with my own eyes.
