How/where to find blueprints/architectural plans? In my experience it’s quite hit or miss searching “subject” blueprints on Google.

Check with your local historical society or town hall. Finding blueprints online is pretty rare.

only place I've ever found them was inside the building. If it is gutted completely probably not, but if it is intact with stuff left behind, they may be left in an office or something similar.

IF you have a specific building most cities will allow you to file a request for copies of whatever plans they have on file. It will take a few days and you will have to pay for it and most likely file a very simple Freedom of Info form but you can usually get them for most places. Obviously, they wont do it for certain locations, banks, military and such
