There is an abandoned mall that me and JBUrbex have explored on a couple different occasions, and it is very cool. There is major damage to structure and interior/exterior as well. Roof access and more is also available. It is sketchy at times though due to the interstate being right next to the mall

its right behind the mcdonalds, super easy access. Just the strip mall its nothing large. Unfortunate though the vandals have destroyed it within the last few years.

Good ole Miromar Mall. We used to stop in there occasionally on the way to my friend's cottage in North Hero.

https://www.google.ca/maps/@44.9832474,-73.4596458,289m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

It was a development of notoriously press-shy Canadian billionaire Robert Miller, aimed at Canadian cross-border shoppers. Miller is the owner of Future Electronics headquartered here in Montreal, the third largest distributor of electronic components in the world. It was actually his ex-wife Margaret that developed it, presumably with hubby's money.

The mall only lasted 7 years or so before a decline in the USD / CDN exchange rate killed it. Thanks to the wonders of community-access TV and portable VCR cameras the opening of the mall was pretty well documented.

https://sites.goog...iromar-outlet-mall

Some ten years after the mall failed so did the Miller's marriage. Robert took Margaret and his one-time CFO to court accusing them of scamming him out of millions. Not sure how that bit of drama played out in the end.

https://www.courth...-to-see-the-books/

Here's a walk around of the mall from early in the pandemic. I imagine it's not looking any better these days.

Indeed is not looking any better. I've been in there a few times when groups of 5 or so come in and start breaking shit for ten minutes before they leave, I mean what am I meant to do lol. I love this place though its super photogenic in the summer.

Edit: FYI: if you're ever driving through and itching to explore there are a few decent explorations in town. The abandoned school is easily accessible, fairly untouched, and probably asbestos filled lol. My favorite memories are from this building.

Sadly I don't get around those parts much anymore as my friend's parents sold their cottage to finance their retirement a few years back.

Another interesting ruin in the area is the remains of Fort Montgomery between Rouses Point and the Canadian border.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Montgomery_(Lake_Champlain)

The owners of the Powertex company had it on the market for something like $10 million for about a decade with no takers.

https://powertex.com

Google News tells me a couple of Canadian orthopedic surgeons scooped up the fort and 300 acres of land last fall for $750K. Apparently they're planning to make a winery / wedding venue / marina out of the spot.

https://www.pressr...-5b6de1c20df9.html

I wouldn't hold my breath. It's lovely country out there, but the regional economy is royally depressed (as I'm sure you know). I wouldn't be surprised if they really bought the property simply for their own personal enjoyment. I mean, who here wouldn't want to own their own historic abandoned fortress?

My mother has been playing lottery for years hoping she will win so she can buy Montgomery. I would have gone to the fort by now, its just the only accessible way is through water most of the year except for a few days where it might get really low. Maybe I'll end up going this year. I can't keep my eyes off of it coming back from Vermont over the bridge. Its a love/hate relationship with this area for sure. I love the trees, the historic and plethora of abandoned buildings for the smaller population, but the damn people. These people suck

"Miller is the owner of Future Electronics"

Back in the early 1990's, I worked at Future Electronics pulling parts at a place off of I-495 in Massachusetts. I was told the owner (A Hippie) started out in business, selling electronic parts out of a station wagon in the 1960's. Later on, he bought some place called the "Seagrams Castle" and had the bedroom walls lined with Lead for soundproofing so his kid's could blast their stereos without disturbing anyone. He bought CD's by mail order and had them shipped to us to be forwarded to Canada.

How much of this is true, I don't know...

Curiously, Robert Miller's name showed up in this morning's news feed. And not in a good way.

I've been researching him and his wife for a while now, last time I went to the mall a kid walked down and told us that Margaret was looking to pin somebody on the damages for the building. I think he was just trying to gatekeep the building however because I've never read anything of the sort, so where did he get this information. I'm not sure how that would legally work, I mean you can't just find someone walking around in a building and tell them they now owe some woman in florida a few million. Part of me does wish that it was still open to this day as it could have transformed my community, the other part is very glad with the memories I've made.

That reminds me of the time back in 1970-something when my 13-year-old self got caught riding my bike up and down the corridors of an under-construction apartment building. For the giggles, ya know?

Asshole real-estate developer thought he could hold my family hostage for thousands of dollars of broken windows the building had suffered thanks to some twit vandals one or two weeks prior. It all came to naught in the end, but not before me, mom and dad wasted a half-day pleading my case in kiddie court putting that shit to rest.

I so hate the money-grubbing types who'll do literally anything to make one more dollar.

"Seagrams Castle"

Walking on Peel Street the other day I passed by this building that reminded me of your post.

Vaguely castle-like, once owned by the Bronfman family of Seagram's fame, it's now part of McGill University.

https://en.wikiped...wiki/Martlet_House

http://www.reporte...ethouse/index.html

No indication that the Millers ever had anything to do with it as far as I can tell. I sure would like to see the interior of that puppy one of these days all the same.

My friends and I have discussed this profusely. If we were rich and owned properties and happened to own an abandoned building, we would be GLAD to let people come and relieve their curiosity. I don't see the point of chasing out trespassers for a few decades and spending your time being pissed to turn it to a pile of rubble eventually when you finally decide there's no hope.

this is noble and all well and good until those people you let in get hurt in one way or another. Then they decide that suing you for your kindnesses will make them a buck or two... in my almost 50 orbits around the sun, one truth that is glaring is there are very few people you can trust. Very few. And when money is involved, that number shrinks even further.

sorry for the gloomy reality break, but...

very true very true. If you have a building posted however, does it take that liability away? I'm not sure how that works. I'm sure there's a workaround somehow. Chances I'll own an abandoned building are unlikely, but it's nice to consider the theocraticals I suppose.

I've spent probably 48 hours or so total in the Champlain mall this summer, so this had me super intrigued. I remember months back trying to find any ties to who owned this building, and it was pretty difficult to dig up information. I'm not a conspiracy theorist or whatever but I think the story gets deeper than those articles talk about him, and I think it links to the Miromar malls (both the Champlain Ny and estero Fl). I'm currently writing a paper on all of the weird coincidences and stuff behind it I've genuinely put in hours researching this man. Mysterious, utterly mysterious and with a higher Net Worth than Jeffrey Epstein. The silence of law enforcement and media is concerning to me.
