Hi everyone. I made this account specifically to pose this question, although it is a bit of a shot in the dark. For years since it closed, I have been dying to explore the abandoned Viscount Bennett school in Calgary. I've gathered some experiences from other forums and have an idea of what obstacles to expect (well, as much as I can). This would be my first "real" urban exploration trip. Has anyone done this site? Or would be willing to go as a group?

Getting in in any ethical way is the challenge. I've seen plywood go up on the windows in the last 6mo. Same with Kingsland elementary.

Im new to this website and i’m not 100% sure how to use it or if i’m replying correctly, but i went there in may and i managed to crawl through a tiny window, not sure if it’s boarded up now, but i went back in june and they seemed to have motion detectors so that’s something to lookout for, not sure if they still have them or not.

I saw a post recently from someone who went in January I think, and they claim to have gone in through a window. Also claim that the motion detectors are all smashed, hard to know what to believe. I used to attend that school so my childhood nostalgia and seeing my old stomping ground been turned to ruin is a weird feeling.

Yeah the doors are definitely all locked, and as far as I know there is a single bored security guard who patrols in a car but sounds not too difficult to dodge. The hard part is definitely finding a window to hop in. This was actually inspired by someone who posted some photos on Reddit from their trip, they claim to have gotten in through a second floor window facing the field (they posted around January).

It is pretty badly vandalized inside which has made the decay a lot worse. The building was tested for asbestos in 2019 and nearly every room has a notice indicating if any materials have it, and many do, notably the floor tile.

Here's some of the images I have. I have over 200, but a lot of the school can be seen from the reddit post mentioned above (not mine)

No way this is so cool! Did you go recently? And can I ask where you found a way in?

I'm still down to meet up for this if anyone is interested (someone mentioned interest above).

Yes, as flySparro said, I can’t say how I got in due to the rules of this forum, and I wouldn’t do so in any public forum anyway mainly because I don’t want to ruin this site for any other explorers, and the place has been beaten up enough by vandals already

I can say these were taken late February, and I’m doubtful anything has really changed since then. I don’t know if it’s been sold yet, but the real estate listing still says it’s for sale. My guess is there’s few developers willing to take on the cost of asbestos removal.

I’m also interested in Kingsland as was mentioned above. It’s going to be demolished in the summer, so time is ticking on that. I’m embarrassed to say, but it took quite literally years of planning and observation to finally get into this school, so I’m doubtful I’ll make it into Kingsland before it’s gone.

Interesting. I've been keeping an eye on it every once in a while and it's definitely an active site. The windows are broken and re-boarded frequently. I wish I lived closer to it so I could do some scoping myself, but I live far.

If you decide you'd like to go in again, I'm happy to join. I do wonder what the best time is to try something like this in case the cops do get tipped off...for example would it be ideal to go during Lilac Fest or Stampede when they might be busier with other things?

I live quite close to this site and i’ve yet to do a bit more scoping to see when a good time would be. A few mornings ago there was a massive truck outside of it that looked to be something to do with cleaning? Possibly asbestos related, so i’m not sure what insight this gives into whether it’s being sold or not. I would love to join in on a trip to it though, i’ve been once but there were a few things that I missed.

I went there like 3 weeks ago, it was pretty alright but one thing I found out is that the doors have silent alarms. Meaning you should avoid getting near to any of the doorways whenever you enter

Not sure when, but the building has been sold to a developer and CBE no longer operates it. A new security company patrols it and all the doors except some ones that are chained from the inside are completely covered with plywood now.

There isn’t power in the building so they must be battery powered and connected to cell service. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had motion detectors within the building now.

Nah, the motion detectors are completely busted, I think likely they are battery powered though, especially with the security presence (all be it, very minimal). It's pretty fairly easy to get in contact with the redevelopment group, so it might just be easier to get legal permission to access the building.

I was in the area not too long ago and it looks like a bunch of cameras have gone up around the outside? There was a work crew in the parking lot so I couldn't take a walk around unfortunately. Planning on taking a walk in the area this weekend.

I was there a few nights ago; no real intention to enter, but just scouting it out really.
The security guard was decently avoidable as they were parked in a marked car around the back of the school near Crowchild, but the real issue is the amount of surveillance surrounding the site.

There’s motion detectors, cameras everywhere, heavy security, and practically no viable entrance due to everything being boarded up unfortunately. It’s basically impossible to get in at all or without getting caught within 5 minutes. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re tearing it down within the next year or so. It’s insane how many security measures they’ve put in to “protect” a defunct school.
