The Neponsit Home comes down!

It's exceedingly rare for state-owned hospitals to get demolished in NY. It's in the Health & Hospitals Corp. (HHC) charter that HHC owned properties can't be sold for private redevelopment and unused HHC property can only be used to build another healthcare facility or a public park.

It was sort of a weird location. It always had 24-hour security, but was easy access until about 2008 when there (supposedly) was a fatality on the property. After that, it got locked down pretty tight.

On one trip there, someone decided they wanted fire alarm pull for a souvenir, which set off the fire alarm and the FDNY showed up.

On another trip there, a certain individual decided to shoot off a pipe bomb, The security came out of the guard shack, walked about halfway to the building and stopped. He stared at the building for a minute or so and then went back to the guard shack. The NYPD never showed up, so he probably didn't call 911.

Surprised to see this come down. I remember when Porcelain Doll, Aerofennec, and I first went by this, it probably around 2009 or 2010, after hearing it should be fairly easy. When we walked up we noticed dozens of dome cameras on all parts of the building, which we found rather odd, given how the building looked. Wonder what the real story is as to why so many cameras all of a sudden went up.

Something happened in 2008 which precipitated the lockdown you encountered.

I think some local kid fell off the roof and there was quite a bit of outcry from the nearby residents. The most expensive real estate on the peninsula sits right next to it, so their voices get heard by politicians.

That makes sense. Thanks for posting. It’s the same thing where I live as well. Nobody cares about the bad/poor sections, just the area with multimillion dollar condos and the tourist areas.

Nice aerial shots.

So is it going to become a park? A new hospital? Or TBD?

Probably a park.

The beach was a popular gay hangout because it was somewhat secluded. They could walk around naked and nobody bothered them. With it becoming a park, that may change.

The adjacent Jacob Riis Park beach is owned by the National Park Service.

2.5km to the West is this location:

Which is also owned by the National Park Service. I have no idea why it's Full-Members Only. It's a public park with improved trails right to it, interpretive signage and an observation deck on top.

Update. They have started on the second building. The power house has already been deactivated from the grid. No more red light at top of stack at night. WIndows taken out and building wide open now.
