May 1 is a labour holiday in several countries. Over here in Korea, it's basically a holiday, but not every industry recognises it. I rarely get holidays at work, so I was stuck at my desk while I could hear thousands of unionists marching outside. At one point I grabbed my camera and ran up to the helipad to see them go by.
1. There they go, carefully controlled by the police.
2. Looking the other way, they're marching toward the presidential office.
3. After work, I waited an hour for the sun to set and traffic to calm down, and then I went out scouting along a subway tunnel under construction I've been casing for a few years without much success.
The grey box houses an entrance to the underworld, right in plain sight of this public sidewalk. I did make it over there, only to find it was locked.
4. This construction fence awkwardly incorporates a phone booth. Why, is the thing a heritage landmark or something?
5. I scouted along several tunnel construction sites, without much luck.
6. I was practically able to limbo under this constrution gate, which was about knee-high.
7. Finally, some success.
8. It was a tight squeeze through all these metal bars.
9. Further down, I encountered...more bars.
10. Finally, I reached the tunnel, or at least a space to view the tunnel. There's no way down there. This tunnel has been under construction 24 hours a day, so I can only go on major holidays.
11. Here's a look in the other direction. These Space Invader-looking things are giant machines that are used for finishing the interior surface of the tunnel, as you can see the wall is smooth on the other side of both of them, whereas all the rebar is still exposed on the closer side.
12. Time to head back.
13. Ugh.
