Insurance magnate Allstate, established in 1931, revolutionized the world of Automobile insurance sales by offering policies through mail in orders. While they first occupied a mid rise building in the Sears Roebuck Co. Complex in Homan Square on Chicago's West Side, they quickly outgrew their original headquarters. In 1967 they moved their headquarters to Northbrook, a suburb northwest of Chicago. This headquarters, originally 730,000 square feet, would grow over the years to over 2,000,000 square feet, housing all of Allstate's central corporate operations. This facility included several functional and non-functional art pieces, including a number of beautiful staircases.
Due to the age and size of this complex, they required a central heat and power plant, and a network of steam tunnels running beneath the complex to deliver power, heat, and telecommunications to the various buildings on the property.
In late 2021, due to the rise of work from home office culture, and an increasingly apparent lack of need for large corporate offices, the sprawling headquarters was closed and sold to a developer for $232,000,000 to be turned into a warehouse and logistics campus. In late 2022, demolition began of this incredible campus. Power was soon cut to the original buildings, several of the smaller buildings were demolished, and work began to start abating the remaining buildings of any asbestos and removing any remaining equipment or furniture. After this visit, power was cut to the newer buildings and they were thoroughly stripped. The campus was widely shared on social media and quickly became a popular spot for local teens, vandals, and scrap metal thieves. The demolition company quickly notice the vandalism, and after several hundred thousand dollars of damages were caused to pieces of construction equipment, local police and private security began to crack down on securing the property. Trail cams were installed, and several arrests were made on and off the property in connection to the vandalism, and tickets were frequently issued to trespassers. As of the summer of 2023 the building is undergoing the final stages of demolition.
