I am anticipating going into a tunnel soon and was wondering what to bring other than a flashlight.

It depends. What kind of tunnel are you exploring?

Bring some waterproof boots if you don't want your feet to get soggy. I always wear Muck boots.

Bring your common sense. Check the weather! If there's even a chance of light rain, go another day. Tell someone you trust where you're going. Most drains are pretty simple, but take note of any turns that you make.

Bring a camera, show us what you find Have fun!

Don't be seen by train operators at the front or back end. My rule is stay to see two trains go by, then get the hell out.

As someone else said, it depends on the type of tunnel. If you can always see the entrance, then one flashlight is enough. Otherwise, a second flashlight or headlamp as a backup.

I've been underground so many times when someone's light quits working and they don't have a back up. Lucky for them, I always carry one.

Also, if you don't know the drain then be extra cautious. The superman of drain exploring, Siologen, was seconds away from death when he climbed down a ladder at a waterfall and thought he was about to step on solid ground covered with a thin layer of water, but it was a pit. He was tossed around like a rag doll in a washing machine. He was just about to lose the battle when he was tossed to the edge & managed to climb out of the pit.
Still the scariest near miss in a drain that I've ever heard.

Early in my exploring days my buddy and I were in a cave when we got turned around and forgot how to get out. Both of our headlamps died and we had to rely on our cell phone flashlights (which weren't nearly as bright as they are nowadays).

Since that experience, I always carry extra batteries with me.

Been there myself. Ever since then my philosophy is to carry at least two (preferably three) light sources and spare batteries for each underground, and phone flashlights don't count.
