I know this has been posted elsewhere on UER not too long ago, but I thought I'd post it here as well, since it's relevant to our particular board and I don't think a lot of people saw the first post.
The
Society for Industrial Archeology (I'll quote from their newsletter) "through it's publications, tours, and projects encourages the study, interpretation, and preservation of historically signifigant industrial sites, structures, artifacts, and technology...the Society advances an awareness and appreciation of the value of preserving our industrial heritage."
I get their newsletter, which has a lot of historical information on industrial sites (the current issue has an article on the history of the New York High Line, for example,) and they do organize regular trips to "industrial archeology" sites. An interesting group, I think.
