Bus Rapid Transit Proposal Postponed Yet Again

Today as part of my urban studies course I was able to go to city hall and listen to the debate of whether or not to postpone the construction of the BRT line in the southwest corner of Winnipeg. Unforunately, city council voted in favour of the proposal to delay it in favour of more studies. Reasons for this proposal include the fact that there the city has deferred a lot of its maintainance on city structures and infrastructure in addition council also wanted more feasable studies. I am highly opposed to this as there have been 30 years of feasablitity studies and the time to build this is now.

I would also like to mention that the main reason why the city is in trouble financially is because it, like many other cities, has only invested in roadways that commonly encourage low-density developments that continually push farther and farther away from the downtown core. With a BRT this trend could slow significantly and the city would recieve more mixed use/higher density developments along the line and elsewhere.

I was just wondering about people's feelings on this?

Well...to put it bluntly, I think it's bullshit. 30 years of feasibility studies? Did they take that long to study what investing in highways will do to businesses in the city? I would guess not.

How Cities Work by Alex Marshall is a short, readable book that does an excellent job discussing the phenomenon C_G describes (investment in car-oriented transportation sucking the life out of urban centers.) Go read it--it's really good, and it does a better job at talking about this issue than anything I can post now in my sleep-deprived state...
