So, what brings you to this board?

IE...what kind of first reponse do you do?

Personally, I'm trained in O2 administration, airway management, automatic defib., extrication, urban search and rescue as well as all the training TTC safety types get.

I no longer use my paramedic training (unless I actually witness a medical emergency).

Like I keep telling you Snarf, don't try to make EMS a career. Keep those doors open and get an education (your nursing idea sounds good...just make sure you get a bachelor of science in nursing as opposed to the diploma or Associattes degree)

Paramedicine is a really good job, lots of fun and what not, but it does weigh on you. Bigtime. Which is why I chose not to go down that road, although I really enjoyed it...it just wasn't for me.

Ski Patrol with BTLS and P-BTLS... Loads of experience, with a fair bit of wilderness extrication and confined-space work. That said, I work in IT, and I'd never persue a career in EMS. It would be way too hard on my soul.

If I wanted a long term career in healthcare, I'd probably go to nursing school.. Definitely the best way to make good money with possibility of job advancement. And for the EMS addicts out there, a nursing degree is a good shortcut to getting a job on a chopper.

But for now I'll plod onward towards a paramedic card.

My wife is an ER nurse at a GTA hospital. She's working on her Nurse Practitioner schooling right now. I'm working towards my BSc in Kinesiology and Respiratory Therapy.

I'm a student nurse! I'm in my second semester, so I have about a year to go before I become an RN. From there, I plan to work while getting my BSN. After that, I'm really not sure. Nurse anesthesia looks pretty enticing, but travel nursing also looks interesting... free housing, assignments of about 3 - 6 months, travel expenses paid for, assignment bonuses... Plus it would be really cool to travel around (even if it is just in the U.S.). Anyway, that's me. I'm really looking forward to graduating.

I haven't done a whole lot of research on nursing salaries, but I think new graduates can expect to earn about $40k - $45K annually, with variations depending on location, cost of living, etc. CRNA's (nurse anesthetists) start at about $120k - $150k annually while travel nurses typically earn $20 - $40 per hour (I'm not sure what that translates into annually... I'd guess somewhere between $50k and $80k) depending on the assignment. So, yeah... nurses in the U.S. get paid pretty well.

I have CPR First aid training (which is mandatory for the company I work for). As a Security Guard, one of my responsibilities is first response to a medical emergency on the site until the ambulance arrives. I had a medical emergency last week and although my involvement was minimal, I actually felt good being able to help someone. And yes, happy to say, the person is doing very well.

I fall short on this relatively impressive list.

I have no serious training in anything medical. I have been planning on taking a first responder and wilderness first responder class at some point. I was signed up before, but had to withdraw registration. I have also been toying with the idea of getting an EMT cert and doing that to pay for college.

I do have a good ammount of experience as a street medic/affinity group medic at large demonstrations. I'd say I'm very competent at dealing with chemical weapons and some blunt trauma, at least at the triage level. I've done a bit of reading on some basic emergency things and feel fairly confident in being able to perform cpr, deal with fractures and things temporarily. I'm an interested novice, essentially.

I first got my EMT basic in '79'. After 2.5 years driving an ambulance, I became a firefighter and have been doing that for 23 years, and still love it. Well, most of it anyway. LOL Now hold a EMT-Intermediate cert. I am also part of our swift water, dive rescue/recovery team. Our dept. does the first responder program but I would not like to work for the Ambulance company here, as they use a program called System Status Management. The units never stop moving and it's real hard on the crews who staff them.

Just got into UE a couple months ago after reading about it in a local publication. Found there are other people out there who like to explore old, derelict and abandoned sites. As a firefighter, I have always enjoyed poking through old buildings, not to mention the burned out ones that other crews fought fire in.

Fire is a great job. EMS has a very short carrer span in urban areas. System Status Management sucks. My old EMS dept used it. The medics were booking off sick in record numbers. Our response times increased with SSM and so did the number of medics who left. Sitting in the cab of an E350 for 12 - 14 hours sucked.

I agree Apprentice! I watch those medics and wonder how they do it. I work a 24 hour shift but I am at a station, it doesnt move and I can relax, use the bathroom and train. Being in a vehicle that long is way too hard on a body. And with SSM, we don't respond with the same crews, so there is no build up of teamwork. You learn the strengths and weaknesses of that crew and they learn yours. I think you get a better outcome when you work with the same crew over and over, but that doesnt happen with SSM.

Geez, no wonder paramedics face a lot of burn out! Why use that system if it is too brutal on the medics who have to work with it? That can seriously impact their performance with pretty frightening consequences. I'm no expert but from what I just read, this doesn't look like a very good system.
