To get things started... A poll! Wee!

What’s your favourite RPG system, and why? D&D is close to my heart, simply because of it’s familiarity and fantasy setting. I’m not keen on hyperrealistic systems like Harn, where a drunken hobo with a stick could kill you with a poke in the bum. You’re supposed to be a hero! You can be hacked and slashed, drink a potion and be back in the action in less than 10 seconds!

A close second run various superhero games like Marvel and Silver Age Sentinels. I love SAS’s character generation, it’s so customizable it’s scary. Sure, it takes 2 days to roll up a hero, but if you want a hero made out of blue rock who can spit cheese out of his ass, fly, and wears a magic helmet that allows him to log on to the internet from whereever he is, you can do it.

Tied with superhero games runs the D20 Star Wars system. ‘Nuff said.

How ‘bout some others?

I selected "Something Else" because I wasn't sure what Vampire fell under......

But I love that game and that system, although it's loosely based on D&D is it not? Hmmm.... it's been way too long since I've done gaming....

I used to love the d20 system, but now I love the percentile system of Palladium. Also, I think that PB offers more material than other gaming systems and the conversion books lets you go from one genre to another within the Pallidium worlds...

"Vampire" falls under "White Wolf". White Wolf produced games like Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, those sorts of things. I guess I should have added "LARP" to the list, too, because I suppose that counts as an RPG, even though it's not a tabletop.

I played a bit of Palladium, like TMNT and Heroes Unlimited, but I didn't like the percentile system the way they did it. I did, however, like the percentile system of Top Secret S.I.

D20 Modern allows for the kind of cross-genre gaming that you're talking about, BPM. Technically, you could have a gun-toting Merc from Iowa, a drow mage and a Mon Calamarian Jedi running around together on the moon.

I've heard of it, but I never saw it or played it. How about "Spelljammer"? Hey, and there was actually and RPG back in the day called "Crossfire"!

Spelljammer was AD&D, Tunnels and Trolls was the very first RPG that Gary Gygax developed.

I was a fan of the game RIFTs myself (my brother had a bunch of the books)...

Me and my friends recently got bored didn't want to spend tons on money on getting a rule book for a game (as we found they can get very pricey) so we found our selves making up our game and while it has a lot of bugs (and we sorta make up new rules on the spot because something screwed up) we managed to make some weird Silent Hill esque horror RPG... its weird but we managed to get some 15 people to play it and demmand more of it.

The rules are all in .doc files on my hard drive... a while back I did make an attempt to make them into HTML because I was tired of only having my one single copy of the game printed out but I grew tiresome and never finished that... ^_^

But unfortunately a lot of the rules are just kinda "mental knowlege" so not all of the rules are recorded but the game was pretty simple.

I guess I like White Wolf about the best. But I'm also very interested in 3rd Edition D&D right now. I guess I like about all the editions of D&D.

If you want fantasy, it's all D+D. Horror? Call of Cthulhu. D20 system has grown to cover almost every other type of setting, and does OK with most of um. I'm working up a Victorian-era D+D game (calling it SteamHawk. guess where it's set) using Urban Arcana, D20 Past, and 3.5 D+D.

Oh and if you want some old school, who remembers Boot Hill and the original Top Secret (not SI)?

I guess it's loosely based on D&D but MechWarrior and BattleTech.

I also liked playing Recon and TotalRecon.

Shadowrun is nothing like Mechwarrior, Battletech or D&D. Think low-tech Matrix without the machines ruling everything.

Shadowrun is killer. The game all of us here want to play, but nobody wants to run. If you have all the stuff from all the sourcebooks in play the whole thing becomes a bit maddening for the GM. But I love the magic/tech mix.

Plus, any game that gives 75% of North America back to the indians is just funny as hell.

Shadowrun is awesome fun, I have probably had the most fun playing it too. I have been playing the new "World of Darkness" stuff recently too, if you have a good atmosphere, it can defiantly get spooky!
