Has anyone heard of Critical mass?

I used to be very active in the Chicago Critical Mass community...not so much now, for various reasons. A lot of out-of-towners come to the Chicago rides and are impressed with what they see, which is nice. The book The Immortal Class by Travis Culley talks a lot about the Critical Mass community in Chicago.

I got ahold of a book called "The Art of Urban Cycling, lessons from the street", by Robert Hurst.

It's a pretty goog book the first chapter of it details the urban cycling experience and sets it up on a timeline. The other two chapeters detail stuff that seem more like drivers education about streets and traffic viewed from a cyclist point of view. 4th Chapter is about accidents, injuries and avoiding them. Chapter 5 is about pollution, Chapter 6 and 7 are about flats, repairs, maintenance, equipment and bikes.

The first chapter is really interesting and should probably be read by anyone who is a cyclist in the city. The remainder of the book is just as good as any cycling handbook out there. Also the copy I got ahold of has a forward written by Marla Streb, being a mountain biking fan Marla Streb is one of my favorite cyclists of all time.

Another great urban cycling book is Urban Bikers Tips and Tricks by David Glowatz (Full disclosure: I'm friends with Dave.) I consider myself an able city biker and I still got a lot out of reading this book. It has everything from picking a bike, maintainance, dressing for all sorts of weather, riding in difficult urban environments (like going up/down stairs while riding), what to do if you get hit by a car, and so on--lots of very practical advice. It's written from the perspective of someone who rides everywhere, every day.

http://bikemilwaukee.com
has info on biking in milwaukee, a flickr group, and other helpful links with tutorials or other general info.
it also has a pretty frequently updated calendar of events (critical mass, races, etc) for the milwaukee/madison area, which is pretty rad.
