Wireless throughputs

I'm posting this in both the Comm Info and the tech talk private threads because the relate.

I've had a wireless router now for a little while. Anyway I saw a wireless NIC last night on clearance at Wal Mart I decided to pick it up being that it will be very useful for me when I move back home after I'm done with this semester. Being that I'm a ham radio operator I was intrigued by what kind of throughputs I could push across a wireless connection. My router is a Linksys with 802.11g capability. My nic is likewise 802.11g, Motorola USB 2.0. What I found is that the type of encryption I was using didn't seem to affect speed at all, at least for the low end security algorythms. I wasn't able to get either of the WEP algorythms working but I'm using the WPA method with TKIP encryption. The nic doesn't let me use AES just because it is an older model. I was able to pull only about 5 megs down and push between 10 and 12 megs up on the connection. Switching over to 802.11b yielded about the same bandwidth capacities, with pushing about 9 and pulling about 5. All this was done on the default Channel 6.

What I'm wondering is what is everyone else's experience with wireless? What kind of throughputs has everyone pushed across 802.11a, b and g? What types of encryption was being used (if any)? What type of wireless equipment was being used? And finally what is your general feelings toward wireless? Is it enough to handle the type of traffic that you typically deal with?
