Hey, I got accepted to the Carillon Advisory Committee last night by our City Council. That means I should have unfettered access to this place in the near future. And some responsibility for oversite of the maintenence and restoration work.

Also recently joined The Historic Richmond Foundation, I'm not sure where this will lead but they do have access to a lot of cool buildings and are active in trying to keep some of the abandoned places from being demolished.

Anybody else have any experience with joining legit groups that have a UE potential?

No experience, but I've considered volunteering my services to Preservation Chicago (or some other architectural/historical type group) as a photographer. I spend my weekends riding my bike around taking photos of interesting abandoned buildings anyway, so I might as well try to make my hobby semi-legit.

I'd love to hear other ideas.

That sounds plausible NV, I'm sure one of the Historical Preservation groups in your area would appreciate the services of a photographer. Historic Richmond Foundation is in the process of cataloging all the historical properties within the city limits, they are also pulling together basic data such as dates of construction, Architect, Builder, style, original use etc....it's an interesting project, amazing that it hasn't been done before.
There is also a local independent website RichmondCityWatch that does something similar and has a forum...mostly partisan bickering about local politicians and developers though.

Sounds quite interesting, I wish you all the luck with your "adventures." Right now the only thing I am able to do Committee wise is listen in and talk with the planners whom are quite interested in my web-site.

Great going XRAHY and go for it NV (the volunteering that is). I was involved in getting the Regent Theatre in Oshawa designated as heritage and had a very enjoyable (yet educational) experience with this. My wife and I were able to explore this beautiful gem of Oshawa's and I look forward to the theatre re-opening. Best of luck XRAHY!

I think any one can apply to be a member of any LACAC organization in a particular city, you then just need to be accepted or voted in by the board.
