Kee Bird wasn't really in the ice, but on it. The other bombers were B17E's, buried under snow into a glacier. I saw work on the Lightning as it was removed, and glaciers are not kind to airplanes. They are under 300 feet of compressed snow and ice.

Here's Glacier Girl as she's being recovered, and a site about Kee Bird.

So what set the B 29 on fire was an APU probably like the yellow one in the 17 above.

I've been feeling funny since I went in that open crypt. Not sure what it is.

The yellow object that was the origin of this thread is an emergency radio set.
Nicknamed the "Gibson Girl" due to its voluptuous curves, it was designed to be held between the legs and hand cranked to provide power when needed. See the link page for a labeled breakdown of the contents.

I think they changed their name to the commemorative air force to be politically correct.

I've seen the confederate air force's B-29 (FiFi) fly at the Quanset air show in RI. Last one in Captivity. They have a large collection of warbirds, many of them still flying.
I love the B-52, definition of a warhorse. First flew in 1952, tentatively scheduled to be retired in 2040, most of the crews are younger than their planes today. I can just imagine some future pilot saying "my great grand dad used to fly the same plane I do". The running joke among BUFF crews is when the last B-2 is flown to the boneyard, they'll send a B-52 to pick up the crew.

I know exactly what it is. It's an emergency transmitter. You hold it between your thighs with the straps around your legs and crank like hell. I used to have one myself (can't remember what I did with it though) they were usually attached to a life raft and had a kite or a balloon for the antenna.
