Ok, I have some extra $ to kick around after upgrading my computer and I am either considering buying an Xbox(with Halo2) or another PS2 (with GTA San Andreas).

what is your opinion?

I have an Xbox and just finished modding it with the Xenium Ice chip. I can now watch DVDs on it, as well as stream internet radio throught it, and play any codec of video file off my PC over the network. I can also download ISO's from the 'net, burn them to DVD-R's and play the games on it. A worthwhile endeavour, if you ask me. Get an XBox.

No, it started smoking and so I turned it off. It never turned back on again. I tried replacing the power supply but that didn't work so I just sold it for parts.

Yea, the dvd chip(correct term?) is not designed to last very long and will eventually fail on you. The only way you can try to make it live longer is to not watch movies on it and to save as many times as possible. I read this in one of their magazines a couple years ago and I was pissed. But since it outlived the rest of my PS2 I can't really blame them about that.

Sometimes my PS2 does it sometimes it doesn't. I've found turning it on its side when you turn it on helps. I'm just hoping mine lasts another year until PS3 comes out, because there's no way I'm spending money on another one.

not watch movies on it? Shit I watch more movies on it than I play games! And its funny to mention this on an UE board, but the one movie it absolutely refuses to play is Session 9.

Well The only games I really have problems with are the newer ones, San Andreas is a bitch to get working. I rarely watch movies on it, Every so often I insert a cleaning disc into it and it seems to solve it about 1/2 the time, Not to mention my dads knocked it over several times :@

The laser assembly on the PS2 isn't as robust as it could be, there is a class action lawsuit against Sony in progress (for falsely advertising the PS2 as a dvd player, when it isn't) the upshot is that while this is being worked out, Sony has an offer to replace the laser assembly for a flat $40 (I think), takes about 3 weeks, my brother just got his PS2 back, works beautifully.

Well, if you use the stand youve fucked the PS2, if you have played with it for more than an hour at a time, you fucked it.

The PSP (smaller PS2) has no cooling fan and no vents, they are shittily made.

IPBWS, get an X-Box or get a kickass gaming computer.

I bought it from a place in Waterloo, actually. They have a store that I went to, but they have a very substantial web shop... I think it's www.gocybershop.ca, let me check that...

Yep, that's the one. They have good prices and are Canadian. Yay!

I got the no-soder adaptor, so all together it cost me in the neighbourhood of $80 after taxes. Remember to back up your XBox hard drive before you do any buggering with the BIOS once the mod chip is installed!

Yeah, I plan to install the mod-chip when I get the X-box(probably sometime after X-mas) and mess around with it until I am comfortable with it then play away.

Sorry about the double post, but did you use the bios that came with it or did you use a different bios off the internet?

I used a different BIOS - I have it on my PC still. I could probably email it to you, it's only about 300k. I also used "Slayer's EvolutionX" dashboard, downloaded the disk image from Suprnova and burned it to a DVD. Once that was done, I was up and ready to go. The Xenium chip is already flashed with its own software, so it's ready to go once you get it installed. Then, you unlock the hard drive, back it up using the chip's FTP server and then install the new BIOS and dashboard.

Easy breezy. It's just installing the chip that gets a little funky. You need to know what version of XBox you have before doing that.

I think I am getting an X-Box from Shawna this year. She took me to a store last night and led me to them, asking all sorts of questions...
