I figured I would bring this up as I came across some old E&E manuals. For some of us who do active sites, woods type stuff, its more important to know E&E. I will try to add info from the book as time permits. Also feel free to add your tips and tricks as well.

if you walk around a site in a random fashion, sharp angles, back tracking ext, before entering, it will slow dogs down, although they most likey will find your trail, but it will give you some time.

Be careful with back tracking you don't want to walk right into them.

If you spray a small amount of mace on the ground, will that stop the dogs?
(the one they use to track people).

Any insight on that?

If dogs might be a problem bring some fox urine (get it from a hunting store) and spray it on the ground in the opposite direction you will be leaving from. Even trained dogs will hesitate and be tempted.

I also heard Lion poop works, on a TV show but I dont trust it.

Red pepper, black pepper, chilli pepper, (who knows maybe even Dr. Pepper), should work and can be found in grocery stores or you can carry a pocket full of McDonald's pepper packets. You can't be charged for carrying pepper like you can for mace in some areas. Besides, I don't think I would want to slush around in the grass with a lump of Lion shit in my pocket - the smell might give you away. I imagine if you told the zoo that you are trying to stop hunters and their dogs from killing the cute rabbits, the animal loving zoo employees may give you the lion shit for free.

peppers do not hinder a dog's ability to track you. For a good read on the subject check out the book "Tactical tracking operations". I can probably find the parts dealing with dogs and give the readers digest version if you'd like.

It seems this was not where I read about pepper effecting dogs. This book only discusses their usefulness in tracking, not how to defeat them.

I remember reading somewhere that peppers had no effect on their sense of smell because it was just another smell to them. The better way to throw them off was to find likely hiding places (trees, pile of debris, etc) and rub your body and clothes over the area. The idea is to consentrate your smell into a small area and then move on. Each time the dog smells the sharp increase in odor it will signal that it found you and the spot will be investigated. By doing this enough you cause the handler to loose faith in the animal because of all the false positives.

I have heard strong aerosol chemicals can defeat animals. I think I posted on how to confuse dogs, which is basicly creating hap hazard patterns. I have the info some where if anyone wants it I'll tr to find the book while I clean.

This is true, While living in the barracks at Ft. Bragg C.I.D would occasionally do sweeps on us, checking for "contraband". We would however be tipped off to said occurence, this would then involve a bombing of the entire barracks with with OC spray and just about every conceivable aerosol we could get or hands on. The result was the poor dog would enter the building and practically have to be dragged through. Being that thier (dogs) sense of smell is so great its a complete sensory overload for them. Don't know how well it would work in a tracking situation but I suspect OC spray would at least slow them down some.

On a side not for those of you interested in the dog tracking info. I just read in spydust that during 1988 the CIA knew about as much as we did on K9 tracking teams.

What they knew about K9 tracking:

"The research showed that the dogs could follow a human's trail in a forty-knot gale in four feet of snow even when the trail was forty-eight hours old. One could slow them down for a while by planning routes that were like closed figure-four(M's note maybe figure 8? or a box type pattern) configurations. The only way to actually elude such a search team would be to break the trailboard a bus, ford a stream, get in a car.

How about walking downstream in a stream, brook, creek, or river. Or any body of water for that matter?

On a side note, some morons were busted for robbing a bank few blocks from my house. It didn't take long for the dogs to follow the path they walked back to their apartment. (a few houses down the street!)

One I heard a while back was cocaine and dried blood. Or coke and female coyote urine. The blood or urinee is supposed to get them to sniff, the coke kill off their sence of smell for a good couple hours.

Yes, I know it's not cost effective, legal, or smart. Just throwing it out there. Perhaps someone knows of a similar, legal substance that acts the same.

Maybe leave little helpful bottles of flonase everywhere? Or just a bunch of sneezing powder. I'd just go with the ground meat with glass shards in it. I'd hate to do it to a dog but if it was him or me...

Im pretty sure that they are not allowed to eat while "hunting". They have those things disciplined better then they have thier men disciplined.
