I'm reading "Dark Star Safari" by Paul Theroux right now. I'm about a quarter of the way through, but it's amazing. He travels from Cairo to Cape Town and records his thoughts on Africa along the way. A little too moody and poetic at times, but really good. If you like travel essays, this one should be at the top of your list.

Anyone else read it?

I read part of "Riding the Iron Rooster" (Paul Theroux's train ride in Asia) and didn't like it so much. He comes across pretty conservative, in his assumptions and observations. Is this applicable to the book you're talking about?

Yes, it applies to this book at times. There are times when I can't help but think that this guy is a self-absorbed asshole. But he does such a good job of painting a mental picture. I can honestly say I can easily picture every situation in my head. Maybe that comes from my own dealings with Africa, but I bought "The Great Railway Bazaar" in the hopes it can do the same.
