Can anyone give me an address (through PM, if you wish) where I can get some mac software? I've been searching the net and haven't found anything. Thanks.

I sent you a PM, LK. Anyone else interested I have 2 invites left to MTKA's tracker, let me know.

Also I didn't mention it in the PM, but I suggest you read around the forums I linked to a little before getting started. There are some rules you should know before looking for software. Nothing big, but like here it's a good idea to get use to the community before taking advantage of it.

Generally speaking, anything that already runs on *nix platforms will run on Macs. Firefox and Thunderbird will (http://www.mozilla.org). Gaim (instant messaging clone that supports all protocols) should run if you compile from source. (http://gaim.sf.net) The same should be true of XMMS (Winamp clone available from http://xmms.org) Other software that are fairly popular on *nix systems are as follows. Most of them should work on Mac OS X if you compile from source.

Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org) This has a Mac OS X native install already, no compilation needed. It's a very nice MS Office clone.

Xine (http://xine.sf.net) A very nice movie playing software. Can be a real pain though to get encrypted DVD's working. You would have to attempt compile from source on this one.

I think that pretty much covers normal client software. Of course there's always the server packages, Apache, Samba, PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SSH, Bind, Sendmail, etc.

What types of other software might you be looking for?

I'm looking mostly for graphic and layout appz. It's an old G3 with OS9.1.

Thanks for your help all. I really appreciate it.

Shoot me your email address and I'll invite you. I don't think I got your address in your PM, Lord Kahos. I have to use the invite feature from the tracker, can't send the invite through UER. And you aren't the Ex-God of Nat, are you?

Anyone else need one, got 1 left. The site has a lot of shit for Mac, both OS9 and X. Pretty much all apps and games and tutorial videos and .pdf's.

Hahahaha. Is Lord Nat here now then? I figured somebody would have heard from him. Maybe we scared him off? I can hope at least.

Conundrum, still waiting for your email address to invite you, I've only got one left and others are interested. I'd suggest anyone interested post here first and see if some of these new users I invited would pay it forward and invite anyone else when they get their invites.

Yeah it's a great place just don't try and get Tiger, some folks had a little legal run in with apple over that. I wouldn't mind checking out the intoxicants forum if you got room for another member.

You were both added to the intoxicants forum.

I didn't know that OS 9.1 cant read .dmg files. I'm gonna do some research... hopefully there's something I can do to get them to work. I think I read I can make them a .sit file, which I can work with. I'm also using my flash drive to move file from system to system because the mac doesn't have internet access and burning CD after CD is a problem witha lack of finances.

You could connect the Mac to the other computer with an ethernet crossover cable, or through a hub, and that will be much quicker for copying data.

The .dmg file is a disk image which you need a program to mount it with, and then it appears on your computer like a piece of removable media, I'm assuming it is an installer for something. I dunno of anyway to convert it to a .sit archive without first mounting it. I think stuffit has a little utility that mounts images, similar to their expander utility. I also believe in OS9 and later, Apple had a utility to mount disk images included with the OS install too. If you can't find anything on your computer, download the free copy of stuffit, or look at download.com for something to mount your image files with.

Okay a bit of an update
I managed to convert the DMG file to a ISO file on my PC (my mac has neither internet or a burner, so I have to do most of the converting and whatnot on my PC). I need to know how to read the new ISO on the mac (OS 9.1). I've tried StuffIt and DiskCopy6.5 but neither of them are doing anything. Does anyone know what the deal is? Thanks.

You should have just burned the .dmg file as it is, not converted it to an ISO. As Macsbug said, the .dmg file will mount like a harddrive, then you open that with finder and open the relevant install files or whatever.

To read .iso files, use WinISO. If you just want to view it, not extract or anything there is a trial version available. If you want the full version, let me know.

I think I may need the full version. If you want you can send it to me through hotmail (new 250M inbox is nice, but I dont keep software in it for more than a couple of hours).
My mac isn't reading the DMG file. I read on a forum that OS 9.1 wont read it. So I think what I have to do is convert the DMG to an ISO, then unpack the ISO, then burn it to a CD (all on my PC) and run the CD on my mac.

Whew.

No. That is incorrect. OS 9 and later can do disk images, I think you can do it in OS 8 too.

Both of these will work.

I've tried using Disk Copy and it goes alright, but then stops at "Processing DDM". I've let it sit there for hours doing it, and nothing.
