Jolly good. In the past I've been a GIS specialist (consulting and teaching), and still use it a bit at work and play. I'm also a data-pig, so like to get it where I can. I also like a nice map, old or new - pity a lot of the techs coming out of school don't have a sense of map design (alas). A lot of my current research is map-based, and I'm doing some potential-mapping based on multiple-criteria analysis and resolution. Woo hoo! Map-boy!

I'm Tijmen, I have about 2.5 GB of map data and satelite photo on my HD, and I really want to have a job with a cartography/GIS related business.

My love for maps grew in the back of my parents car, on the trips to france with the Atlas Routier de michelin, still in my view the best mapmaking ever done. I'm so good in reading maps, that since age 12 my parents preferred to have me in the passenger seat to guide them through Paris instead of the other parent. (Last summer, I drove through paris myself and I didn't need a map, I just knew the 1200-km road by heart, scary isn't it?)

I'm brand new at mapping, and so far it's been by totally primitive means. I'm hoping to learn some tricks by conversing with people who've had more experience. Thanks for the opportunity!

I'm Bryan and well currently underway to get my USCG Captains license. So I'm mainly into maritime cartography and coastal mapping. However, I love to look at topo maps and satelite imagery. Use it a lot for UE and finding locations in the middle of absolute nothingness.

Nautical charts are my favorite! If you like nautical charts, I suggest getting some maps of the Maine coast. There's some crazy stuff up there.

I'm alan, and I'm a cartophile - from whisky and paper to radio and liquid crystal I love it all. I'm probably one of a handful of people that knows how to use a sextant that you have ever met.

I am an old school orienteer, map and compass back country hiker, commercial pilot's license (before GPS was common in general aviation) so I'm also well versed in radio navigation. I've been using GPS since it started becoming inexpensive to the general public for both foot, surface and air navigation.

I love maps - old, new and everything in between, I own an extensive collection of maps digital and paper.

I refuse to allow my sons to touch a GPS unit until they are well versed in map and compass. GPS is a wonderful, wonderful tool, but without the ability to read a map or understand the basic principles of orienteering, you're really just a tourist. (I also intend to teach them to swim very very well before they get a pair of fins or snorkel, I'm just that kind of guy).

Hi im gunslinger, im in the military and a pilot so navigation is relatively important to me. im an old fashion kinda guy i love me map and compass and i also like radio nav. Have not used GPS much, dont really have a need for it. i learnt how to navigate without it, therefor why do i need it. The way i look at it, if you cant use a compass what are you doing using GPS. I also have a decent collection of charts mainly pertaining to aviation.

This site has it all - in the left hand margin you can get your sectional charts, terminal area sectional and IFR Enroute charts.

Sectionals are used typically for general aviation, low altitude visual navigation.

IFR Enroute charts are almost exclusively radio navigation charts

In the main body of the page you can search for or enter the ID for an airport and get their approach/departure charts and airport services charts.

These guys also have some cool 3d vector maps...seeing as we all love maps here's the link...they also have downloadable sectional charts.

Hello all, xrahy here. I've been fascinated by maps, charts, and aerial photography for as long as I can remember. As a young child I spent many hours drawing fictional maps of towns and cities and even entire empires...not much time for that now but two of my favorite books I read on a regular basis are the Gazeteer and the Atlas. I also spend hours on topozone.com the richmond, virginia GIS site. I just wish they would complete all the layers (like sewer system and other underground utilities). anyway thanks for creating this board, I look forward to discovering new information and sharing what I have.

crazy american charts, the canadian ones are a lot simpler.

WAC- World Aeronautical Chart (i believe 18 of these cover canada and 14 cover america and the caribbean)
VNC- VFR Navigational Charts (which use the largest landmark in that area, so like toronto, halifax, winnipeg)
VTA- VFR Terminal Area Charts (cover the terminal area of international airports)
Enroute Charts- basically for radio nav
CFS- Canada Flight supplement (has all the pertinent info for all Canadian and North Atlantic aerodromes)

and theres also Instrument Procedure booklets of which 5 volumes cover Canada

I'm using GPS and (Digital) maps finding bunkers and old forts and other things to explore. In the field i'm using a Garmin Geko 301 and various 1:25000 / 1:50000 maps. At home i'm using ozi explorer together with "kaboutermaps"

I'm Mark. I have been fascinated with maps since an early age. My family went on many travels when I was younger and I loved highlighting the route we traveled and finding new destinations off of the main road. My father was an Eagle scout, so I also spent some time in the wilderness using topo maps and a compass for traditional orienteering. I'm known to just sit and read a road atlas while taking a bath, it's true just ask my GF. I also go to the Boundary Waters at least once a year, so I have a collection of maps of the area and enjoy hiking around to new places off of the established trails. I recently received a basic Garmin eTrex GPS for christmas and have had fun using that. I'm interested in mapping underground locations and have accompanied Slim Jim on a couple mapping trips of vast underground spaces. I use to be a tour guide at a museum in Kansas City, often times I would know of the location and nearby roads of some of the out of town patrons distant homes. Knowledge of geography gives me a better view of the big picture, hell I have a map of the moon above my desk.

Anyway, this seemed like a fun forum, so I joined.

I just joined, but my Uncle does 911 maps for Huntsville alabama, and I am interested in doing some geography to help my "Search" for UE locations. hehe, speaking of which, does anyone know where I can get a copy of some topo maps with countour lines for Denver colorado?
