So many people now days live by electrionic devices, and computers. Many more ignore the wilderness and what it can teach us. I am a firm believer that if your a UEr, or a Combatant, it is good to sharpen your senses, and understand your surroundings.

These Tricks were pulled out of the The Tiger's Way.

Even on a moonlit night, the Malaysian guerrillas of WWII needed some sort of light to follow a jungle path. They soon discovered that a few fire flies or luminous centipedes in the reflector of a flashlight gave off enough light "to read a map, lay a charge or follow a path" In the primary jungle during the day, one can see farther at ground level.

I think a good point can be made by this. Many UEr's worry about having enough or not enough light. Personally I believe you can use a little light and learn a lot. I think getting low to the ground has its advantages as well.

More to come.

At SEX-Fest. we had to navigate that power plant sans flashlights. It was actually very fun.

It wasn't pitch-black, wither. There was a little light. Enough to be tricky, but still fun.

Hmmm, very good points Mark. I tend to go sans flashlight when needed, or red light to keep it low and dark.

On another point about senses:

I tend to keep my hearing senses heightened at all times. I'm naturally a very good listener, I've always been able to hear distant things and listen to multiple things all at once (ie. several conversations going on at once), so I tend to be pretty good at being aware of my surroundings and any sound that happens.

I hear a TON of things on missions.

It's a good thing though, always a good thing.

Although training your hearing is another thing, I'm not sure what would make a good exercise, I guess it definately would involve a bit of clearing your mind and being able to focus on more than one thing.

So practice focusing and clearing your mind at the same time, this will not only open up just your sound senses, but all the other ones as well, at least the important ones, like touch, sight, etc. Naturally you'll be able to "feel" your surroundings, and know your surroundings better.

Much of this you probably already know but I think its worth posting.

Sound travels farther in the direction the wind is blowing. When there is no wind, conditions are also excellent for hearing. In the dead of night, surrounding noises are more pronounced than at dusk or dawn. In level open terrain, where there are no obstructions to sound waves, noises travel farther . Sound travels farther in the winter. With one technique, a ninja can hear stealthy footsteps at a range of 30 meters. To increase hearing ability one can also hold his breath.

There is a ninja technique that uses every cranial cavity to collect vibrations. One cups one's hands behind his ears, tilts his head backwards a little, and opens his mouth. While this may sound somewhat ludicrous, US special forces do teach cupping one's hands behind the ears and turning one's head in the direction of the sound.

Many Urban Explorers rely on one sense. Sight. I believe that looking through the lense of a camera also helps promote this. Even with the heightened awareness many experience when out about, in abandoned buildings, hearing isnt at the quality it should be. OPEX alone showed me how visually oriented many are, while walking around many ignored many noises, even though it was the first time in. AV did point out a lot of noises for those of us who were paying attention. Although he had to say it several times because people were asking "is that a person." I believe most of that was due to the fact that they didnt here AV in the first place and didnt notice the footstep sounds earlier. I think the technique and the awareness is a good thing to be semi experienced in.

Ever since I was a little kid I've always paid far more attention to my hearing than most people. Having grown up wandering abandoned places, and being in the wilderness (northern and swamplands) a lot, I always paid close attention to hearing (you can't always see a hidden danger, but often you can pick up on small noises). I basically always notice sounds before anyone else i'm with and have lost count of the number of times that my hearing (and often just my gut feeling) has saved my bacon. I've been on missions with Jolt (black belt in Ninjitsu) who's pretty quick to notice things himself, and everytime, I've noticed the trouble coming before he did. Couple of times it was funny because I heard something close and just reacted, leaping to cover, so he turns to look and i'm gone so he knew then to do the same...

When I got to explore out here with a visiting military trained explorer, we both had times during the mission that we heard something the other didn't and at first doubted the others senses, but soon realized we were both very on the ball, and soon we were working in unison by hand signals as we tracked the sounds, and then silently made our way out as I led us to a reliable exit.

Yea as I've said before I always here things very well too. I tend to hear almost every drip, drop, clank, wind whistle, etc inside a building. I hear the cars outside, I hear people walking by. But I've always been very good at listening, it's good to know your surroundings. And listening to your surroundings gives you a pretty good impression of what you're dealing with. I tend to like to perfect my "blind" senses as I call them, the sense of touch and the sense of sound. It works well in dark buildings when the lights are out.

Then again, so does perfecting my own natural night vision, which is also pretty good.

If I think about it I HEAR a lot. I think I have very good physical hearing. I tend to zone out or just take it for granted though. Just back-ground noise. Any advice on how to be more aware of sounds without purposefully concentrating on them all the time?

I actually used to sit with my eyes closed and just listen. It teaches you to pay more attention to your hearing, and after awhile you'll find that even when your eyes are open, you're more aware of sounds around you.

Spend some time in the woods at night. The reason I says this is closing ones eyes forces the hearing sense to get better, but prevents the eyes from advanceing. essentially its covering one sense to promote another. In the woods at night will not only strength your ears it will help you with your eyes as well. Two at once so to speak

This will also work in abandonments etc, less light more senes so to speak.

I tend to use very minimal light, usually red led intermitantly (so lots of time with no light source except ambiant). What you suggest is good Mark, but I think thats best for once a person has trained their hearing a bit more by being forced to only pay attention to it, then integrating that with training your sight.

well for me personally hearing and touch have always been important senses to me. hearing has endless uses, often on training missions its me hanging in some tree somewhere, 1/2 dug into the ground, or doing point. i rely on my hearing because i often have to close my eyes to not be seen so i can ambush the target (yes your eyes do shine and glimmer in the moon/star light). i also try and minimize the use of my flashlight. also touch is incredibly important for me, some people are incredibly good and tricky at laying booby traps, so that ever so slight tug on your ankle or leg is the difference between being caught or catching them.

Probably the second least used sense Smell can be a great indicator of people, animals, and dangers.

The ninja has a four-step smelling technique: 1. Take a deep breath 2. Exhale it. 3. take shallow sniffs until the lungs are full. 4. concentrate on the nostril linings at the very top of the nose.

Three down three to go. Any of you with techniques and info please post away.

This is a interesting concept. I never thought of Tasting as a sense I would use that often, untill now. Its amazing what you can learn by tasting the air. Without further Adue the least used sense.

experienced night fighters can discern odors through their tongues, or more precisely the soft membranes under their tongues.

To cultivate your ability to taste teh ari, purse your lips as if about to whistle and slowly draw air in. Allow the air to swirl around and under your tongue. Try to discern salty from sweet from oily. With practice you will be able to discern perfume or deodorant (a sweet or oily taste under your tongue) and residual tobacco (sharp, pungent) left in the air or on closing by a passing enemy.

I think this is worth some training in. May come in useful.

well actually has anyone seen in movies where the "hero" will pick up some dirt, smell it, perhaps taste some of it, then rub it between his hands and let it fall to the ground. there is actually a technique to this. its hard to explain, it has to be taught and learnt from practice. but if you can master it you can figure out a lot of information about your surroundings and who has recently been there.

Touch

The asian Night fighter attempts with his whole body to feel anything out of the ordinary. The human skin is extremely sensitive to changes in temperature. Inside a house ,residual heat on a chair or bed could spell trouble. Shell casings from silenced weapons might still be warm. When someone lies on the ground for a prolonged period of time, he leaves a momentary heat signature behind. For reasons that are yet to e explained, a skilled ninja can often sense another person nearby without actually touching him.
