| | | i also like to make my own cotton infused tinder, the store bought stuff burns for 3 minutes, mine burns for 10 with 6 inch flames. 1 take a small metal tin and put the wax of 5 tea lights in it 2 fill up a put with 2 inchs of water and boil 3 suspend tin in teh water using metal coat hanger wire 4 take some some cotton balls and pull them apart slightly, make them longer and thincker 5 using a pair of plyers, dip and soak the cotton balls in the melter wax, take them out and let it drip for a few seconds, shake it a little. 6 place on wax paper untill dry 7 when ready to light, pull it apart a bit and light with a lighter or match, or light some tinder with a spark and lay the wax cotton on top

| | | Here's my survival kit. I take it hiking, boating, and camping, sometimes on extended UE trips as well. Food: Powerbars, trailmix, instant drinks and MRE odds and ends. Water: Filter Bottle, treatment tablets. Clothing: Emergency blanket and disposable rain poncho. Fire: lighter, waterproof matches, Magnesium firestarter (Actually, most of this has been stolen by the TSA. They used to leave a little note for you to find once you got out on your 4 week camping trip, but now they just take anything flammable). Food Procurement: Wire saw/snare (these blow, don't buy one). Assorted fishing crap. Assorted types of line and string for snares. First Aid: first aid kit with random bandaids, bug-dope, sting treatment, etc. Joint tape, fist aid booklet (in waterproof bag). Hand wipes. Multi-vitamins, asprin, etc. Navigation: Compass, survey tape. Measuring tape (not sure why that got in there). General: Swiss army knife (backs up the other knife and/or multitool I usually carry). Waterproof flashlight, hand/foot warmers, toilet paper, mini-screwdriver kit, nail clippers. I used to have a mini-stove and solid fuel tabs, but I think the TSA stole that too. I could fit a lot more stuff in that fanny pack, but it's starting to rip on one side. I had a bigger kit that was almost a bug-out pack at school. Mini tent, sleeping bag, MREs and extra food, spare clothes, bigger flashlight, bottled water, all ready to go in a big backpack.
