FTP

I was at my buddy's place yesterday trying to start up an FTP server for our group of friends at school (which actually only incudes one other person) and I couldn't connect to it from my laptop via 56k modem. He was WindowsXP, we were using Cerberus to make the server and I tried with the internet plugged right into his machine (he has a router, so I tried to bypass it) and even turned off the internet firewall and still nothing. On my laptop (Win98) I was using CoreFTP to attempt to connect, since 98 has no in-browser FTP support. I also tried to connect with a user I made on the server AND anonymously but still nothing would connect. Can anyone give me some much needed assistance? Thanks.

What ISP? Some block port 21 to prevent people from starting servers. I know my ISP does.

We switched the port to 6969 but I think I got the router address instead of the server machine. What I'm going to do saturday is get another LAN card and put the modem directly into the machine, then put that machine int he WAN slot of the router for the network. It should make hosting files and the website easier to get to, plus with the right software it should be safer as well.

If you just use ipconfig to determine your IP, you're getting your network address. If it's something like 192.168.1.1, that's not it. You need to find it some other way. Ask one of the mods for your IP, they have it.

Oh, and make sure you have port forwarding set up on your router if you're going to be using some strange port.

Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door.
