Last night I picked up a street dog on my way home. He's a sweetie, about four months old, looks like a pitbull/sharpei mix. He has mange covering most of his body. Does anyone know any home remedies for mange? I've heard that one can use used motor oil to get rid of the mange, but so many of the spots on his body are open wounds from scratching, I'm hesitant to do that. I'm going to give him a bath and put some of my dog's flea treatment on him, so at least he won't be itching as badly, but the mange is terrible.

You might want to have him checked out by a vet. The reason I say this is that some skin conditions are caused by underlying internal problems. If I were in your shoes, I'd let the vet decide that it is mange, as opposed to a dermatological manifestation of something rather more serious.

When I posted that message, I wasn't able to take the dog to the vet because of money issues. However, I found out today that a girl I used to work with has a friend who's a vet and will check him out for free, just charge me the cost of the medicine. Rock on!

I sure will. Taking him in today. He seems to have an eye infection as well. I need a sugar daddy just to support my quest to save all the street dogs.

I know how you feel. My little guy, shown in my avatar, was a six-month-old street kitty when we scooped him up and brought him home. He just turned 6, and is spoiled rotten.

All the animals in my house are rescues, except the hamster. Rescues are the best! Your kitty is so pretty. I live in an urban area, I've been here about a year. Not a week goes by that I don't see a street dog running around. Most of the time I try to get them to come to me but they don't, so I just leave some food where I found them and wish them the best.

My car wouldn't start today, so I'm taking the new guy to the vet tomorrow. He's much more active today. He's been laying around, not doing much except eating. When I went out to feed him today, his eyes lit up and he started wagging his tail. Excellent sign! Now I need a name for him.

Just got back from the vet with the new dog. It was some sort of parasite I'm not even going to begin to try to spell. All told it was $115. The boyfriend okayed the use of emergency money for it. The main medicine to get rid of the parasites was $60. I couldn't believe it. The vet hooked us up with some salve for his eye infection.

Even better news: I stopped by my parents house to say hi on the way home, and the both fell in love with the dog. They may keep him after the medication rids him of the parasites. Yay!!

That's great news! I hope you parents keep him and have him for a long time. Found animals often make the best of pets.
