busy night
entry by Gatsby

D_Wrex told me a few weeks ago that he was gonna have a week off from work, so I knew he'd be scheduling some serious missions. I took a night off during the middle of the week to ensure a spot on his week-long show.
First, I showed him the MONSTROUS drain which Ofberenonehand and I had discovered over the weekend (we have yet to explore it).
Next, we headed over to Fort Knox (aka Theater near N. Mpls). We had previously scouted it out and knew we would get in tonight. Our homemade tool was good enough for the job and the time was right. We arrived and got started before anyone saw us.
I can freely say that our entry point was a manhole in the back, because when we started to lift it, we discovered that it was locked down from the inside! AGGHH!!! This was not just disappointing, it was depressing. That was most likely the only chance we had, and we were denied!!! I have one more idea, but we'll have to check it out, first. ;)
Since we had planned on exploring and photographing the theater all night, we had to come up with a new agenda. I remembered something Asylunt mentioned that I wanted to check on. ASYLUNT - don't read this if you don't want to know (you told me not to tell you where it goes).
We went to this certain wooded section of Mpls and found what was described to me. It was a medium-sized metal plate that was bolted to the ground. We sized up the bolts and headed back to my place for the proper tools. When we returned, we found it very easy to remove the screws and hastily lifted the plate off of the stationary bolts. This action revealed an old shaft that looked to be about 25 feet deep. It had no means of descent except a crappy rope. I was about to say "forget it", but D was more ambitious. He started shimmying down with the rope's aid and made it to the bottom without thinking about how hard it would be to get back up with backpacks and tripods. True explorer!
Once we were both down, we realized there were 3 tunnels heading off into 3 completely random directions! They looked a lot like TCRT.
Unfortunately, they all dead-ended pretty quick. We took a lot of photographs, but probably won't return anytime soon. This WOULD be a perfect place to hide out, though! I'll have to keep that in mind. (it was surprisingly easy to climb back out, btw)
Lastly, we decided to do some tailracing. There were certain spots that neither of us had been to, so we headed inside. We got to the end of one and headed up into the old, massive machinery. 2 or 3 stories up, we came to the place that, years ago, my friend yelled down to me to say "it doesn't go anywhere". I wanted to see for myself, finally. Of course, our trained eyes immediately saw that it DID go somewhere. We quickly rushed into the hole and heard the sweet sound of distant humming. We were in sub-basement world!! We explored this layer for about an hour or so. We saw 4 dead rats, one of which smelled exactly like poop. We found that our assumption about the place was wrong - we couldn't get into the building we had hoped to get into. It was fun as usual, though, being in an underground place we hadn't been to before.
At one point while coming back down through the old machinery, I foolishly depended on a warped piece of wood to keep me balanced so I didn't fall to my death. It didn't help at all and I slipped. My heart stopped as I struggled to breath. I'm talking about falling 30 feet onto rusty, twisted metal. I caught my balance just before I fell. Wow.
Back outside, we scouted more along the river and found a potential entry point to the building we wanted to get into. We'll need to pump up D's raft and try it soon.
