Post-Apocalptic Movies

Has anyone seen a good post-apocalyptic movie that they've enjoyed, and felt that the scenes in the movie represented what would really happen in the event of a catastrophe?

I ask because I enjoy the genre somewhat and have given some personal thought to what I would do if a disaster were to occur (probably die, like the rest of humanity), and also because I saw "28 Days Later" last night and it started me thinking again. I had some problems with the movie's execution at points, but it had both good and bad points in terms of how the remaining people would fare in a disaster of that type.

Any recommendations?

For technicality, "The Day After" was the quintessential post-nuclear war movie.
BUT, for entertainment purposes only... let me count the movies.
"Mad Max"
"Road Warrior"
"DefCon4"
Others are escaping me... why, because I am watching Van Wilder...

I've heard there was a british movie, or perhaps mini-series sold as a movie, that was very good. I can't remember the name though. I love post-apocalyptic stuff, but never know where to look.

Just watched Mad Max the other night. Good stuff. "Maybe it was the result of anxiety..."

Oddly enough Discovery Channel's "Super Volcano" had a decent movie attached to it. It was about an hour and a half long. Showed what would happen if the caldera at Yellow Stone were to blow in a big way. Towards the end the effects that changed the world were pretty evident...and dramatic. It was good and based on fact for the most part.

Ah, more post-apocalyptic movies to watch on a rainy afternoon/evening.

"The Postman" (if you can get over it being over 2 hours long, fun movie)
"Steel Dawn" (come on, you looooove Patrick Swayze but you won't admit it)
"Solarbabies" (weird idea, fun movie)
"Tank Girl" (what;s not to love? Ice T as a half human/half kangaroo!)

Day After Tomorrow gave me high hopes... but those hopes were smashed to tiny pieces once I actually saw the movie. It was complete shit.

War of The Worlds had a really apocalyptic feel to it though... you almost felt like you were the only one left in the world at times... well, except for the aliens.

Maximum Overdrive was kind of apocalyptic in a way as well.

Yeah, Day After Tomorrow was more eye candy than anything relative or good movie... More spectacle than anything else. Now Maximum Overdrive was so bad it was fun! I had a ball watching this uber horrible piece of crap movie. I mean, it was a blast!!!! I suppose that if you are into Oscar Award winning material, your brain will burst into flames if you watch schlock like this.

I like Steven Kings The Stand. Its a good post-apocalypse book, and i believe it was made into a mini series as well.

Actually, The Stand was a watchable movie... it took a HUGE book and condensed into something to watch that wasn't shit. I had the whole miniseries on VHS, but have no idea what I have done with it in the 5+ moves I've made since 1990.

Hm, I just mentioned it elsewhere, but "Delicatessen" is one of my faves that happens to be post-apocalyptic (and romantic to boot). Second choice for P-A genre has to be "Last Night" with/by Don McKellar - also somewhat romantic.

I loved 28 Days Later, one of my favorites. I also thought War of the Worlds was a good, realistic view of the end of the world, in terms of the people's reactions, although I think the ending could have been better (would say why but don't want to give it away).

A classic apocalyptic movie I have yet to see but have heard good things about would be "apocalypse Now" with I think Martin Sheen.

Another one which I think was the basis for 28 Days Later is The Omega Man. It's an old classic I used to watch on AMC with basically the same plot as 28 Days Later.

Actually, Apocalypse Now was a Vietnam-era movie (released in 1979) and was based on (loosely) the book Heart Of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.

It's a pretty intense movie, especially for the time it was released in.

on a surface level, yes I did. BUT, there was something about the movie that bothered me. Even now, some 21 years after the first time I watched, i still am not sure really what that is.

Anyways. I liked Heart Of Darkness as well...

Apocalypto, directed by Christ, er - I mean Mel Gibson, is looking good.

An action/adventure film set 600 years ago, prior to the 16th-century Spanish conquest of Mexico and Central America, where a man goes on a perilous journey to save his idyllic world.

2001 and 2010 were NOT apocalyptic movies by ANY stretch of the imagination.

maybe you should, i don't know, READ(!!!!) the books that they were based on? Maybe give some insight on them. 2001 was long, but far from pointless. 2010 was fun a romp through the solar system.

They are actually a whole series:
2001: A Space Odyssey
2010: Odyssey Two
2061
& 3001: Final Odyssey
all by Arthur C. Clarke.
