Upgrading a mac

I've done a lot of work on my G3 powerPC (beige desktop case). I;ve added a USB card, 256 M of ram, a 20 G harddrive, upgraded to OS9.1 and added a 56K modem.

What I want to know is if it uses the standard ZIF processor or is it something else? With the ZIF my understanding is I can upgrade it up to 1GZ, if I can find the processor. Can anyone give me some info? Thanks.

Yes, the beige G3 does have a ZIF socket so the CPU is replaceable. However, as far as I am aware you cannot simply plug a raw G4 CPU into the G3 socket, you need an upgrade module. I found one here http://www.sonnettech.com/product/encore.html

Yeah, what he said. Now throw OSX up on it, get a bigger HD on there, a little more ram, and you'll be set for years to come.

Totally agree with Macsbug when it comes to RAM - If you put OS X on that thing then really I'd suggest at least 512 to get any real performance.

We just flung a load of beige G3's in the skip at work the other week!
