Not necessarily. You can always get yourself a chain breaker, take out 2 or 4 of the damaged links, then put it back together again. Your derailleur will hang a bit tighter, but it shouldn't affect your ride.

Unless of course you're running single speed, that's a different kettle of fish.

So what's your ride? Throw up some specs!

Exactly...and whenever I install a new chain I always have some links left over, which I save just in case I need to do any chain repairs later. Not that I ever had to...I've never had a chain break, lucky me.

I have snapped my chain a few times now. Usually it's when I'm going up hills. And then I usually fall and say some bad words. I reattached the chain but now my bike makes this awful noise as I ride up hills. I'm just going to have to buy a new chain.

How often do y'all replace your chain?

I replace mine 1 or 2 times a year (depends on how often I ride that particular bike), which helps to prevent wear on the rear gear cluster. I'm a bit fanatical about kepping my chain clean and lubed, too.

I only ask because I've never broken a chain (and I do ride a lot) and I don't think I've personally ever seen a chain break either. I'm wondering if there is a link between "old stretched out chain" and "broken chain", that's all.

On my mountain bike, I'd replace the chain once a year. Then I stopped caring. Now I just replace the chain and cassette at the same time, whenever they wear out. Although it seems like XT 11-30 8-speed cassettes are getting harder to find...

On my single-speed, I've never needed to replace the chain, and I've ridden it hard for five years now. And I've never broken a chain on either bike.

I usually blame broken chains on cheap chains or poor dérailleur adjustment (chainsuck and the like). Riding with the chain in the biggest gear in the front and back (or the smallest gear in the front and back) can put stress on a chain too.
