1.6TB hard drive

I never thought these kinds of hard drives were commercially available. O_O

Yeah, they are just really expensive and have really high seek times.

Not to nitpick, but this isn't a 1.6 TB hard drive, it's a 1.6 TB logical disk. It is simply a box with 4 normal 400 GB drives setup in a RAID 0 so they appear as one big disk.

And yet, I wouldn't mind something like that. Of course if one of the hdds goes, you're screwed.

Can you imagine the time it would take to back up 1.4Tb of data on a regular basis?

Which is exactly why you use rsync to backup. Rsync only backs up updated files. 1.6 tb would take a little while to back up, but hopefully the fastest possible speed firewire in conjunction with gigabit lan would make the process somewhat less painful.

No, if you have that kind of money you just buy two and keep it mirrored.

I actually bought a system like that - it was sweet but I had to sell it. I picked it up from some ebay warehouse that buys equipment by the pallet - it was mis-spelled in their auction - so I got it for like $400 Took it out, plugged it in, sighed, packed it back up and sold it for $1200 on ebay.

I just couldn't justify it.
