Mac's to use Intel Processors...

Just wondering what some of the other Mac users on UER thought of the recent announcement that Apple will start to use Intel processors in new machines?

I was going to invest in a G5 but think I might hold off now for another year and see what happens.

This may sound stupid (I'm not a mac user, btw) but I've read 3-4 stories on this and they all say, exactly what you did, that "Apple would use Intel Processors". Intel makes way more than the x86 series, so I wonder if any of these news releases specifically say that Apple will be using the x86 architecture and not just "Intel Procs"?

While nothing I have read specifically says that Apple will use x86 Intel processors, the demo they did was using a 3.6 GHz Pentium 4, so I think that pretty much confirms it. Also, it has been said that if for whatever reason someone wished to run Windows on one of the Intel based Macs it would work, so that also points to x86 compatible chips.

Everything I've heard says that the Mac OS X will run directly on an x86 proc. While the PowerPC is a far superior chip in many ways, it makes the most sense for Apple to do this now. The Intel chips have significantly faster clock speeds and it will open up world for OSX to expand into other markets. The OSx core is FreeBSD and that's been x86 compatible for eons. Apple was stupid before and they lost 50% of the market share because of it, now they're being smart. So I'm really looking forward to when Apple makes the full blown change. I myself am very much looking forward to having a direct alternative to Windows that is a little more user friendly then Linux.

It is more user friendly, but you have almost no control whatsoever.

Control over your files. OSX doesn't allow you to do certain stuff to your files such as linux does.

I keep meaning to put Linux on my Mac to give it a spin but just never seem to get round to it.

OSX is Unix, what exactly do you mean when you say that you don't have control over files like you would Linux?

The audio protection thing with itunes is built into osx. I can't access most of the music on my mac they loaned me at my old school.

OS X is NOT Unix.

Unix is an established standard and you need to PAY to be TESTED and CERTIFIED Unix.

FreeBSD is not certified. Neither is NeXT.

They are unix-like but NOT Unix.

(Actually its a good thing that they're not unix but thats a different discussion.)

More info on Unix Certification here:

Yes, it is; it is "BSD UNIX" and not OpenGroup's "UNIX".

Different standards.

It's a UNIX type OS built directly on the principles of UNIX. I'm reminded of a famous quote, "It's close enough for government work." --McGyver

Unix is an established and registered Trademark. You can only use it if you pass certification and PAY for it.

That is why BSD and many others don't.

Unix, BSD, GNU/Linux and other unix-like OSes are based on the posix standard, which is why they are all similar. Not cause we all want to be Unix. Unix is a bad thing (look at the fragmentation in the Unix market pre-1993).

And I have a question, if being unix-like is so good and having a connection to a unix-like OS is good...how come everyone only talks about OS X's FreeBSD roots?

Why don't we here about the NeXT roots? Is it simply cause open-source FreeBSD is cool while the closed-source NeXT is not?

Its actually funny cause the FreeBSD layer in OS X is tiny (just the kernel really) while the NeXT layer is a large part of the OS, and you might be able to make an argument that NeXT was closer to certifiable as Unix than FreeBSD ever was.

Hah! I was right. <middle finger>.

My disappointment was captured by an Apple spokesman who commented on what the switch does not mean: "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac." Future "Mactel" computers will have specially designated Intel chips, not generic x86 compatible chips found in common PCs. My sources say that Jobs is going to use Intel's cryptographic technology called LaGrande to make sure OS X will only boot on Apple-branded hardware. This is a similar technique to the one that Microsoft used to make sure Linux could not be loaded on Xbox.

The bottom line is that PC buyers will unfortunately not have the option to install and experience OS X. There will be no low-cost laptops from budget-minded Taiwanese manufacturers. There will be no generic AMD or Via white boxes sold by the millions capable of running OS X. Apple will not be reaching the 95% of the world buying Intel-compatible machines.

I'd like to outfit an X-Box with that OSx86, that'd be pretty cool.
