This thread I suppose is directed mostly towards lopix at this point, as I believe it was you who entered this location in the UE DB, no? Anyhoo, is this that neat little spot in the woods on the north side of Rossland that you enter through a little clearing. It's just between Salem Rd. and that bloody new clone community? Because it was so funny when I saw this, last year sometime I just randomly infiltrated that woodland and stumbled across what I believe is that very location. I have some pictures too. Did you find some other strange paraphernalia in and around? Such as an old red truck and a fender/or door of some sort?! lol And shoes...it was creepy but really neat...I remember I crossed that little stream and followed that path right out to the tracks. That was something, I'll tell ya. It was a neat little experience. I stood there until a train approached and gave me it's eerie whistle. Then I snapped a photo and jumped off! HAHAH Yeah I'm nuts.
But I'm assuming I was in the same place?

Were you taunting the train? Be careful on the tracks, I'd hate to see you get hurt.

TheMadHatter - that is the place! I wanted to get it documented as I had not been there in about 5 years and it was all alone then. Now the road is paved, 1000s of houses around, gas station at the corner. How long will it be there? I am worried...

No red truck, where was that? I did see the door... And yes, shoes and shingles and weird stuff all over the place.

I want to go back and look to the northwest of there, near the base of the communications tower. I found some strange buried concrete work there, as well as an old car. Got the major heebiejeebs that day though, so we bugged out of there. Was also cold and snowy and crappy day.

Definitely have to go back again, peaceful, weird and creepy all at once

IndianaTeach - check http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=23283 to see the pix, ruins and all! Yes, took my wife and I a good year to track down the exact location and find it. Not the easiest one around, that is for sure! Just hope they don't bury it under more houses...

Lopix, great work! I found that place years ago when I was searching for the fabled "Salems Lot" I read about in a Ghost Story book. Theres an online account of that location just north of the ruins too. When I had first found the location an owl swooped down overhead...creepy for sure! Ive even metal detected in the area. Im guessing the 'settlement' was a crude amateur 'back to nature' attempt when the depression hit...ave read about the squatters attempts to live off the land when they became unemployed. This is my theory, at least. Its super creepy when one walks along the obviously planted row of conifers that leads 90% of the way to the mill. Ive found some relics across the road there too. Do you remember the old wooden wall/structure that used to be by the road just in front of the path entrance? Creepy hardcore. Its gone now. Theres also lots of neat plants along that trail...many which I think were once grown in gardens but went wild... The brickwork that remains is horribly crude...looks piecy...salvaged, etc. Did you notice the concrete floor though? I found some wires once and hydro stuff, so if there was actual power to that home, maybe it was self generated at the mill? Man...this mystery is a good one....

I wonder, since there is an obvious dam there, which is what makes me think of a mill. That and I have heard that it was built in the 1930s. But, since there isn't a lot of water flow there, I wonder how it would have worked. Might be worth trying to find an old map of Durham Region and see what is marked at that spot, many times they give owner names.

It is the piecemeal nature of the brickwork that makes me think it is old, like fieldstone work. Not sure of the concrete floor you are mentioning, there is a bit of a foundation, but no "floor" that I could see. Yes, you can see in my pix there is a shot of the old hydro pole, or what appears to be one.

And yes, that wooden gate/fence/entry thing, that was so cool and creepy! Shame it is gone, torn down to widen the bridge and pave the road. Dummies...

Hey,

I think in the past the stream was much more powerful. Because of northern developments (cough Deer Creek cough), many of the feeder creeks were rerun, turned into storm sewer systems, etc. Sad really. We are loosing sooooo many waterways due to suburbs.

BTW...more relics, house parts, etc, can be found of you encircle the pond there....

I found the shingles and drywall piles to the west of the pond, but have bushwhacked around it anymore than that. What else is there?

Today I was on Salem (coming from HWY2) and as I was coming up to Rossland and I thought of the mill and I wanted to park my car and get out and explore it! Is it still accessible, because I'm fairly certain I saw a fence up by the entrance recently. I'm not sure, I could have been driving at the time and didn't get a very good look but I didn't see how accessible it was. I'd like to see it again. Now that we've started talking about it again there is renewed interest. I think I'll go look at my pictures again! (Actually, I was just coming from picking up my latest psych pictures when I drove near it today ^_~)

1930's, eh? That's really interesting. It's funny, I remember researching it when a certain person (lol, Indiana!) told me about it.

lopix: There was a red truck...I don't remember what it said on it. I can tell you later or something because I may be able to get something from my pictures if I go look at them later. But it was...shit I don't quite remember what the area even looks like but it was crashed into something or half off a ridge or something. Shit it's been too long. I don't know guys lol I want to go back there soon!

Indiana: What was the legend again? I remember looking it up once. It was creepy.

AND LASTLY the stupid thing about all this is, when I came here, it did not even occur to me that this was the "Salem's Lot" I was told about, about which Indiana told my buddy! HA Good thing I didn't know...I might have heard those ghosts crying...lol

Actually Salems lot is more north on that trail...on the west side of the old mill ruins....

The story...hmm...the one ive read or the ghost one LOL The actual history is what lopix and me were trying to find out (btw lopix...i once found old wooden windows behind the pond...there used to be a path encircling it).

The Ghost Story book I can loan you...its at the school, but ill pick it up this week...or try library if your in a hurry.. "Ontario Ghost Stories" by Barbarra ....(forget last name). Its called Haunted Beasts Im pretty sure...you dont want me to ruin it and tell you now do you?

The Salems lot is an open area in the woods with a fire pit, some arranges logs around it (or there was), and if you blink, you'll miss it, but when your in it, its obvious your there. An old party spot too.
