I still haven't made the move... is it safe to do so?

I don't want to lose any of my files. I don;t care about re-installing stuff, the only things I care about are all of my digital photos.

Oh yea, how can I get rid of Mandrake Linux? Used it three times and gave up on it. Now I want that hard drive real estate back.

I haven't had any problems with SP2 - and I deal with it pretty regularly.

As far as disk reclamation goes - you should probably look at partition magic or some other utility for creating/resizing partitions.

I've got a question about SP2. Last may, a friend loaned me his copy of windows corporate, and the SP2 CD. I installed XP Pro, but didn't bother with SP2. I vaguely remember him saying something about USB drivers too..
Anyways, my copy of Windows doesn't recognize anything that I plug into either USB or Firewire. It simply says
:New Device found: external hard drive
Click on it on my computer
:This device needs to be formatted.

This goes for my USB flash drive, my digital camera, and my iPod(using firewire).
I have formatted my iPod about three times trying to make it work. Oddly enough, the USB and Firewire used to work, but they won't.
Would this problem be caused by my Windows or my nVidia chipset drivers?

SP2 works great. The only thing I would do first is check for spyware. The only times I've seen SP2 hose as system was because of a pre-existing spyware problem.

Reboot: I don't think the lack of SP2 would cause the problems you are seeing. SP1 and above have USB2 drivers, however your devices should still work at USB1 speeds. Still, updating is a good idea regardless.

It may also be a problem with the USB controller - you might want to get the latest firmware update from your motherboard manufacturer and install it, assuming loading the latest drivers for the motherboard doesn't resolve the problem.

Alrighty. Reinstalling the supplied chipset drivers didn't work. I'll try the new firmware thing.

Edit!!!! Aha!
I went into add hardware, and it had a little question mark for the USB drivers and I got

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

I'll try to snag something off of Abit, and then Microsoft's site.

I do not use it because it gives restrictions on the raw use of ports/sockets which breaks many networking/security applications and I only have XP on my laptop, which is primarily for work purposes.

That being said, it's like any other service pack - It is stable enough to be considered "working" and useful for most end users.
