Yeah, I've spent some time with it. It's a big pain in the ass to run but it fills some important needs...

Word to the wise - if you're "buying" or "leasing" a server and it's not a real server, but a VM server - you should be paying about HALF of what a real server would cost. Kind of like the mileage they post on cars - "assigning" you a 3Ghz P4 with 1GB of RAM and 80GB os Storage space is usually not comparable - performance wise to a real 3Ghz P4 w/ 1GB RAM (80GB is 80GB, right? but usually it's a bit slower than a real server with U/W SCSI RAID access)

Let's just say the performance the sell does not really match the performance you would get from a stand alone server.

I have VM-Ware 5 installed on my laptop, I just have to get it up and running with Windows 2003 server Enterprise. Something to do on downtimes this weekend.

Yes, I've used it, and every other virtual machine software there is.

It's very good, very fast, and they'll soon have 3d acceleration. It can't natively access busses like QEMU can, nor does it have as small a footprint, but it's still very good for a "normal user" (and GSX is VERY good for servers, but, unlike Chainsaw, I am assuming you are thinking about it only for personal use and not web hosting).

I have run:
Windows (All versions)
Dos (All versions, all manufacturers)
QNX 6
BeOS MAX 3
Solaris 8, 9, and 10
Every linux I can think of
in VMware and in other programs on various occasions.

And have never had many problems (With Be, for example, you need to get a display driver and audio driver, for example, but all work, and work well). I have had some issues with kernel-panic-on-initial-boot from random CD images that just refuse to run, but they seem to run fine on newer versions.

I have even made a 2-router/firewall/"Download Computer" gateway system out of a 450MHz PC with virtual machine software.

I successfully got VM-Ware running with 2K3 Enterprise, Fedora Core 3. Next step XP-Pro and Longhorn/Vista. Plus anything else I can think of download.

We bought a copy here a few months back....it's running on a clone server...Server 2003 Enterprise, dual P4 3 ghz cpu's, 4 gb ram, 2 120GB drives for boot and 5 10kRPM WD drives on a Promise SATA raid controller for the actual machines, 2 Win2003 Standard Servers and one XP Pro session. When it runs it runs grrrreat....however the main console seems to lock on a regular basis and it seems to randomly reboot itself. Was curious what some other experiences were with it...
