Simply put:
I downloaded the collections of two "vxers", people who collect and create viruses, approx 30,000 malware files to test AV software.
If you want protection, and are willing to pay, use
Kaspersky. Hands down the best antivirus program, finds everything, very fast, very trustworthy. Absolutely the best.
If you don't want to pay,
FORGET AVG and
FORGET ClamAV - they couldn't catch a basketball with a black hole.
Get
BitDefender Free Edition- It's also free, and in a comparison I just made with roughly 30,000 malware files (all known and in the public domain so all AV programs *SHOULD* detect them) - BitDefender found almost as many as Kaspersky, about 23,000 virus types in 29,300 files with another 540 suspected. BitDefender is Teh Sex, so to say, with about 98% efficiency.
AVG and ClamAV both found 16-17,000. WTF is that? That's like using a condom you know is full of holes. Worthless. Piece. Of. Shit. Also BitDefender has a nice looking interface.
Norton and McAfee are complete bull. They are from creepy US companies that are known to let some malware "slide" when it is used by other US "interests" (huge scandal a couple years ago). The products suck (find less viruses), hog resources, cost DOUBLE what Kaspersky costs, are VERY slow, and shouldn't be trusted. The "office desktop" products are a bit better than the personal trash, but as I said, want to pay for a condom you know has holes in it?
As a side note, since only two people have said anything about the big Free Programs list, and no one has contributed; only 3 people contributed or replied to the adblocking thread (and apparently only they found it useful); no talk of anything "technical" seems to happen here other than very simple things, "What games U ply; How do I BitTorrent; And home-network how-to" (not meant to insult, I'm just noting the topics); not a single person could think of the resolution to my silly bash mistake; not a single person has replied to the post about the possibility discussing more technical issues such as "managed networking"/system and networking security/"hacking"; etc., I'm annoyed at seemingly wasting time putting out info and resources for others and not even getting a "thanks" or "Hey, I didn't know that. Cool." - and I'd say the time spent reformatting the Free Software list and then posting it, getting 1 "thanks" and 1 "this is useful" out of 140 views was only useful to those two people and was otherwise wasted. I won't spend any more effort on people who don't find it useful enough to even say "thanks", so if you found this or the other posts useful, I'd appreciate a quick PM just so I know I'm not wasting my time.
