What do you think happens when you die?

I guess this is the oldest question in the book (so to speak), but I was just curious what everyone's ideas are.

As for me, I guess you could call me agnostic. That is to say I don't claim to know whether God or something you could call God exists, and if it does, I don't really have any idea what its nature is.

So just going on personal experience so far, my "best guess" is that when you die, you just sort of lose consciousness and stop existing, like before you were born or perhaps like being under heavy anesthesia, only permanently.

This idea seems pretty boring, but more 'practical' than a lot of the other ideas I have come up with. On the other hand, who am I to say what is practical in the universe and what is not, so maybe I will be pleasantly surprised .

Anyway, just curious what you all think.

As for me, I follow scripture. And scripture is clear that once the body dies, the soul goes to one of two places.

"A noble man asked Master Hakuin: 'what happens to the enlightened man at death? What happens to the unenlightened man?'
The master replied, 'Why ask me?'
'Because you are a Zen master!'
'Yes,' said Hakuin, 'but not a dead one!'"
(from Kapleau, 1971, p.60)

Occam's razor: is a soul needed for life (to wit: humans) to exist?

Answer: no.

Loss of conciousness as the body ceases to respire, followed by a whole lot of nothing. Believe what you will, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Good luck in Winterpig, buddy.

I came across this web site quite by accident the other day and although I usually tend to take a more orthodox Christian view of the what happens after death, I found Divisiontheory to be a beautifully thought out and researched explanation of what may possibly be the key to the afterlife. I have only begun to scratch the surface of information this site contains but the general theory is outlined at this link:

I shall become a bed of rich substance for a sapling that will grow into a massive oak that will get struck by lightening, fall to earth, and crush a man I affectionately call "Shrub' to death.

Then and only then will my life's work be done.

This is a quote from the writings from the Baha'i Faith.

Divine perfection is infinite, therefore the progress of the soul is also infinite. From the very birth of a human being the soul progresses, the intellect grows and knowledge increases. When the body dies the soul lives on. All the differing degrees of created physical beings are limited, but the soul is limitless!
-Abdu'l-Baha

What happens when we die?

We transform into whatever else that may exist in this universe, or beyond that, whatever. We don't 'go' anywhere because it's all here in our existence already. Consciousness still exists, but we may not be connected to it in a recognizable form to ourselves due to the nature of how we will exist after death.

A flower dies, it becomes part of the soil below it and then transforms to be other flowers or a tree, or a worm, whatever.

We die, we do the same.

I believe in a soul, but I believe it's our connection with the essence of life. Not a thing that leaves the body and goes elsewhere. You disconnect your computer, move it and connect again, doesn't mean the network went away or changed somehow.

I believe in reincarnation and that heaven is a resting place between your different lives. I dont believe in hell but I believe in purgatory. And I do believe in God.

Don't know what will happen and I will see at the moment it happens. I surely hope I don't end up in a place where I have my camera with me but nowhere to get film.

I kinda spent the first thirty years of my life getting ripped the fuck up, physically, mentally, and chemically. If I had thought I would live this long, I likely would have taken better care of myself. As it is, I expect to fall completely apart any time now. So when that happens I'll be sure to let ya'll know what happens when your warranty finally expires.

If you don't hear from me, assume it's bad.
